So I'm in a pickle. My buddy lost the key to the parts truck he's giving me. I was going over tomorrow with a battery and some gas to see if I could get it started long enough to pull it onto a trailer. But now there's no key... So I'm gonna have to break the ignition I guess. Any advice on how to do this? I was thinking just beat a flat tip screwdriver in with a hammer then use vice grips to turn it... Will it work? Years of working on old cars and trucks and this is a first for me

 

You may be able to remove the ignition switch and put one you have a key for in it. I looked at the 95FSM and while the pictures have the key in the slot the removal instructions do not mention it as part of the removal. I think you can also replace the key cylinder on the ignition switch so you can rekey it.

yup been there, not a big deal, take the covers off of the column and take the ignition switch out, like 4 torx screws, ign lock cylinder is easy to remove at that point, put electrical part of switch back on, grab a pair of pliers and twist, to start the engine

What year is the parts truck? For a 1995, it looks fairly simple.

For my 1988 with the tilt column, it's quite a bit more of a pain to get to the lock cylinder and get it out to unlock the column.

And yes, if you pull the switch and lock cylinder, it'll unlock the column when you put the new switch and lock cylinder in, and unlock it.

Parts lists say it's the same switch and cylinder 1991 to 1996; so you're lucky there.

Do you need to drive your "good" truck to go pick up the parts truck? If not, get the switch and lock cylinder out of your good one to go pick up the parts truck.

If you DO need the good truck to get there, order a new set; put them in the parts truck for now to get it home, and then get the door locks rekeyed to match the new lock cylinder. Then move them all over to the good truck later.

Problem solved and no problemw ith the lock cylinder failing later. *grins*

Nah, said screw it. I'm gonna go grab the parts truck with a wrecker and just get it towed home. Only cost me maybe 120 to get it done. Can't wait to get the parts here tho. A good pcm, truck had a full tune up done on it before it got parked cuz the owner died so the cap rotor and wires I need are all there. My truck hasn't ran since I got it home, time to fix that

 

Go visit the dealer, with the VIN number of the parts truck, and proof of ownership. Ask them to pull the key codes, and cut you a new key.

 

I did this. It cost a few bucks. I think it was under $30.
