Default Transmission swap 1994-1990

Hi, I have a 1990 dodge dakota 5spd 3.9 can I take the transmission out of 1994 and if so do I need to swap the flywheel not just the clutch?

I gather a manual transmission from your description.

Depending on the transmissions, you may also need to swap the driveshaft, or maybe not. Also, remember that the 94 bellhousing has the opening for the crank sensor that the 1990 doesn't.

So, I'd cover that hole some how to keep crap from falling into the clutch/pressure plate area.

not sure what you are trying to do, but I think the 90 used the nv2500 trans and the 94 used the ax15. Different spline count and different dia. clutch and flywheel.

Yes its a manual. Basically I used the transmission out of 94 and put into my 90 4x4 now when I go to start it the starter just spins and dosen't engage the flywheel. I had to change the clutch. I'm assuming I need to change the flywheel and starter. I just wanted to make sure before I go through the process of pulling everything back apart.

did you change the bell housing? I believe you need the bell housing, flywheel and clutch to swap a 94 ax15 into a 90 nv2500.....

Well, if you didn't change the flywheel, then that's probably NOT the problem if it worked before.

Unless it was, say, a V8 transmission; the starter may be out a bit further due to the larger flywheel, and so, it's missing the current one.

I'd have to peek inside and measure to say for sure.

OK, let me share some of the facts I found online on differences........

1. Flywheel
87-91 130 tooth, Ring gear dia. 13.218 in.
92-2000 143 tooth Ring gear dia. 14.338

Clutch
87-91 10 3/8 clutch 23 spline
92-2000 10 3/8 10 spline.

So, IF you used the orig, 90 flywheel, with the 94 bell housing, then the starter is not going to engage the flywheel. It is setting back too far.
But as you said, you used your orig. flywheel and orig, (90) bell housing, then it should engage. IF all of this is correct, I would be testing the starter. Sounds like the starter is spinning but not kicking forward. IE: bad solenoid.
Or, sounds like you used the 90 flywheel and the 94 bell housing..... and in that case the starter is setting too far away from the flywheel to engage.
Hope this helps.

I'm planning to do same thing with my project 1988 3.9L Dodge Dakota 2WD. My brother took broken A535 off the housing 17 years ago...no one bother about the truck and it's mine now. I want a reliable manual transmission and will do light towing someday. Since I have a original '88 housing still on '88 flywheel with '88 starter, I'd need a newer clutch and 21 spline input driveshaft for AX15 to fit, correct?
