Exclamation The Trailer Hitch Crisis

I'm trying to find a trailer hitch for my 92 dakota. It has the 5.2L v8 and an auto 2wd. It didn't come factory with truck so i need a harness plus the hitch itself but I already found tons of harnesses just not quite a hitch setup that im comfortable with. I'm needing to haul my 86 Porsche 944 turbo that weighs in the ball park of about 2600-2700 pounds and I plan on renting a U Haul dual axle car trailer( listed at 2200 pounds dry weight) since the rear end is messed up on the car so that leaves out the option for a dolly. I was thinking around a class IV hitch but all im finding are Class III and non of them really reach the capacity of the truck or even the amount im hauling. any recommendations?

So combined 4900 pounds? Class III is plenty for that. I have a nice Curt Class III hitch that is 500 tongue/5000 tow and you know that's a conservative rating.

I dont believe you will find a class IV for a Dakota. A class III is good to 8,000 lbs with sway control. Class IV is good to 18,500 with sway control.

Here are a couple of links you may find helpful.

If you are hell bent on finding a class IV for your truck you may be able to find one for a 92-96 f150/f250. The frames are the same width and if you order most aftermarket class 3's for these they show they fit these, the old fords, and old fullsize dodges.

Realistically though a class 3 should be more than enough because if you are planning to push hauling 5000 lbs you will want a weight distribution hitch which will give you the added towing capacity up to 800 tongue and 8000 trailer capacity.

His max towing capacity is at best 5900 lbs. That assumes he has the heavy duty package, AND 3.90 gears. It doesn't matter what kind of hitch he puts on it, that is the MAX he can legally tow.
