Default 4wd hi not engaging

Hey first time posting need some help I’ve had my 96’ Dakota 5.2L 4wd for a year now love this monster of a truck but the 4wd HI hasn’t worked properly for me since I’ve had it, it will go in 4L n just fine but not HI. I can shift it (some of the time) and have to hold if not it pops out. Any recommendations on how to fix.

Start with making sure the linkage is properly adjusted.

In the factory service manual (downloadable from the FAQ; look about 1/3 or so down in the first message), it mentions how to adjust the linkage on page 21-380 (550 according to Foxit PDF reader). I'd start with adjusting the linkage to make sure it's in the proper location.

After that, it sounds like wear on the range fork; that would require a tear down and rebuild to fix.

But that portion of the manual, page 21-361 and up ( page 331 absolute ) talks about how to test it, how to maintain it, and how to rebuild it.

Well I’m gonna go ahead and try to adjust the linkage but how hard is it to rebuild the four-wheel-drive transfer case for a beginner with the limited budget and knowledge of rebuilding a transfer case

*broken record* Download the FSM and peek through that section with the page numbers I posted earlier.

Then you can answer your own question, by considering your own capabilities.
