Default Shocking, I know!

I will have to take back the muttering I've been doing for my KYB Gas-A-Justs on the rear of the Dakota.

For the past month or so, the back end's been bobbing around; only about 40,000 or so on the GAJs.

Today I get under there to put on the Ranchos I bought.

Turns out ... shocks don't do much good if they're not bolted to the frame! *facepalms at self*

Doesn't matter, the passenger side got tied up between the exhaust pipe and the spring, and is now bent.

Now to go buy two new bolts for the top, and to pick up some new bolts for the bottom (driver's side nut was loose on the bottom; only obvious thing is a missing thread about 2 out from the solid shaft. Nurts.)

Did you forget to tighten things down when you installed them? One would think they would make a LOT of racket before finally letting go......

I thought I had tightened them; I'll add some LokTite to the bolts for THIS install!

I dunno, doctor says I'm having problems with short term memory. He also says I'm having problems with short term memory ...

New bolts put in.

Top are 5/16 x 1" long; stock are 5/16-18 but I went 5/16-24 so I could buy some flange nuts. Just means I have to turn a few more turns in this application.

Bottom is a 1/2-13 x 3" long shoulder bolt.

All new bolts are loktited in place so I don't have to worry about these 'spensive Ranchos dying the same way.

Sometimes we get to involved in complex solutions we forget to check the simple things first. I got a truck once that they wanted me to tear into the electrics to find out why it would run with starting fluid and then die when it was stopped. I put it in the shop and started running the Mark 1 eyeball over everything. Checking to see if the fuel tank was in properly, I rapped on it with my knuckles. I called the owner and said I had it running. I poured a gallon of gasoline in the empty fuel tank.

The Ranchos are now installed on the back - I had a panic service call (which I ended up not being able to do anything for!) so had to get cleaned up and leave the old KYBs on the front.

I do believe the truck rides MUCH better than it ever did; even with the old KYBs on the front.

I'll have to grudgingly admit the Ranchos are better shocks new than the KYBs were.

(There's one place that the truck has ALWAYS done a dipsy-doodle in on I-20, eastbound just west of Airline Drive in Bossier City LA. The truck doesn't now, and the road hasn't been fixed.)

Kyb shocks still suck even when bolted down. At least the ones that they sell for 87-96 Dakotas. I've had them before, took them off with about 10k miles and threw them away. Gabriel ultra is a much better choice.

A lot fo the house brands are made by either Monroe or Gabriel. I know Autozone does and I think O'Reilly does too.
