Default Power Steering Pump for 1989 Dakota

Which years are compatible with my 1989. I need to get a junk yard replacement and I don't know which years will work.

Jim,
First off, welcome to the forum.
You did not mention what motor you had...
Assuming it is a V6 on the dakota it appears 87-91 all are the same.

I am basing this on looking on rockauto.com and then clicking on the part number..... It shows what all used that pump
FWIW some vehicles from 80 and up are the same part number. So you may be able to look at other then dakota's for the pump.
Good luck.

Well, it'll be the 3.9 or a Shelby with the 5.2; both use the same pump. And the 2.2/2.5 didn't get power assist steering at least through 1988 (1989 might have.)

I'd recommend against a junkyard unit, unless you're just that broke; these pumps are failing with age and springing leaks due to being, well, 30+ years old now ... RockAuto does list some with the reservoir down as low as $31 with $20 core. (Take those numbers and toss them against Amazon if you're a Prime member.) I don't care for A1 Cardone; I've not had good luck with too many of their reman'ed pumps over the past years. YMMV though.)

Hi 93_ragtop and RalphP, thanks for your quick reply. You both made the correct assumption of the 3.9 engine. Yes, unfortunately junkyard parts are a necessity at this time, but also, this truck came without the power steering pump in it so I need the pulley and hoses as well and a junk yard pump will have those included. I went to the junk yard yesterday on a scouting mission. They don't have any in the 87-91 range, but they do have a '93 with a 3.9 and the pump on that one looks tempting. I know it would fit my bracket, but the steering mechanism on the '93 is a lever arm and I think my '89 has rack & pinion. I'm not sure about the steering type in either case, but I do know that they are different, and the hose length may not be correct. I'd like your additional thoughts on the matter. Thanks. Jim

There's also the problem with the '93 should be serpentine belt, and the 89 is V-belt.

Also, hose lengths are slightly different.

In addition to what Ralph said, 2wd will use a rack and pinion, 4wd. will be a conventional steering gear. This probably will not make a difference with the pump or brackets, but I feel sure the hoses will be different....

Thanks guys, I went ahead and bought the pump from the '93. It did have a V-belt pulley. They sold it to me for $20. plus a $5 core charge, but they threw in the belt and the mounting bracket. So all is well. I'll install it tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I could have had the hoses for free too, but I couldn't loosen them so I had to cut them. I may have to buy the HP hose at NAPA or someplace. I have heard that NAPA stocks deeply and they have good prices.

HP hose; and a hank of return hose, plus four clamps(!!) Use 2 at each end, turned 180* out, to make sure it doesn't leak.

I had an 87, with the 2.2 and power steering. Did somebody retrofit that in there?? Got a pump rebuild kit from Napa. Changed the the big O ring between the pump, and the reservoir because it was leaking. Ran good, except for that crappy carb it had on it.

Duly noted.

Let me rephrase that "According to the FSM, the 4 banger didn't get power steering or auto transmissions in 87 or 88". Whereas the FSM is the go to book for hardware, it's not quite infallible.
