I dunno, but I'd look at pages 19-15 in the FSM for the outer (hint: 44 lb/ft) for the castle nut and the jam nut. For the inners, I do a single "UNGH" with the open end wrench and LockTite Is Your Friend.

(The FSM can be downloaded from the link in the FAQ. I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend downloading it ... )

My 1988 shows the inner at 70 lb/ft, but use a 32mm open end to back up on the rack itself, so you don't twist it and damage it.

As an alignment guy I changed hundreds of tie rod ends over 20 or so years, and never once put a torque wrench on one. Never had one come apart or strip out either

just remember... on the outers you will probably think "tight enough" between 2 slots of the castle nut for the cotter pin. NEVER loosen to get to the next hole, tighten to next hole "the other way".

Gotchya....have read this also over the last few days myself thanks.Of course i've waited 2 days for the weather to clear and the water under the truck to to drain to get these things swapped out,but after i got the boot off i realize the inner tie rods on the truck don't have the slots on them, they are just round. Can't find my pipe wrench to try that.Guess it's another day to wait until the stores are open to buy another tool.

No vise grips either?

That's what I used last time.

I own 2......little one and a bigger one.The ones that'll fit are in my daughters trunk and she's visiting out of state for the holidays.Kinda glad, who wants to do tie rods on christmas.

Good to know though that vice grips alone will work.I'm still a little ticked i can't find my pipe wrench though.

Ok so after borrowing a pipe wrench from work and breaking my inner tie rod loose i discover that the tie rods on the truck DO have slots on them for a normal tie rod tool. What i'm not under standing is why my rack doesn't allow me to use the standard tool??

I wasn't even able to use the tool i rented to put the new one back in.The slotted/flat section has to go into some what of a sleeve i guess we'll call it leaving only the rounded end exposed to work with.

I did as suggested and got it pretty tight with the pipe wrench.

I just found it odd that the tool was useless.
