I picked up a 5.9 out of a 2000 ram.... Came from a forum member.
Here are a couple of pictures.
Hopefully will get it stripped down to the long block and then go from there...
Will be putting this in my 87
Thanks Ralph,
I am going to strip it down to the long block, then for sure a pan, a oil pickup, timing set, a rear main seal. and probably freeze plugs
I plan to use a edelbrock 7577 intake, 670 holley carb, and some form of electronic ignition.
Hopefully that is all I will have to do.....
Once I get the pan off, I plan to pull a few bearing caps for inspection, and go from there.
The forum member I purchased it from told me it ran great, used no oil, and oil pressure was good. His son wrecked the truck.....
I may be picking your brain, especially if I run into any electronic problems!! So you may have to block me!!
Worst will be a "Idunno". I'm smart, and a know-it-all, but I don't ACTUALLY know it all
For gauges - the biggest thing will be if you have the tach, you'll need to adapt to a 4 cylinder tach (since it was all done in the ESC/SMEC/SBEC/JTEC for our trucks.)
If you DO rebuild it, consider stroking it ... "Ain't no replacement for displacement!"
Aw hell yeah dude! I'll be following this one. I've been wanting a V8 4x4 RCLB, but it seems the only way is a swap. May as well go 360 if you're swapping! Keep us posted on your progress and the issues, I'm interested in how this goes for you.
Hey Buick,
Thanks!! FWIW Im glad to see you on here posting mods etc. Its been kinda slow the past year or so....
I'm glad to be back. Really fell in love with these trucks again. I want to get at least one or two more of them. Going to look at another on Monday. Might have to change my name on here as now my Dodge trucks far outnumber my land yacht Buicks lol
Wanted to update this thread. Stripped the engine down to the long block, pulled the oil pan and then pulled the rod cap from number 1 or 2, cant remember which..... but here is what I found.
Decided to go ahead and disassemble the motor. Here are a few pictures of the crank.
I ordered a crank through advance auto parts..... getting the crank with bearings for about $155.00
Here is the timing chain, which is to be expected
The block looks pretty decent, as far as I can tell. Still see the cross hatch in the hone.
Through Rock Auto, I have ordered a set of std. rings, gasket set, cam bearings, oil pump, freeze plugs, and a timing set. Still need the oil pan, and pick up tube assy. Also, I think I will need a dip stick tube....
My plans are to clean in my driveway with degreasers, pressure washer, etc, and then hopefully hone the block and reassemble....
One last picture I wanted to share.
It would appear that someone had problems with the fan backing off!! I ended up cutting one blade off, and then could reach the waterpump bolts.... Not a big deal, as I am replacing the water pump and will be running electric fans.
[[b]QUOTE=buick;3472470]Awesome to see progress! What are your HP goals on the build?[/QUOTE]
Assuming the heads are in good shape, I plan to leave it stock other then a edelbrock 7577 intake, 670 holley, and a hei ignition. So 230-250 hp. If the heads are bad, I will go with EQ heads, and a small cam....
