Need to plug in, and see what the PCM thinks is going on.

The ECU is trying; let's see what it thinks is happening.

You've got it fairly easy; yours is a 1996, so it's OBDII, so it's got monitors of all kinds exposed with the proper scanner.

For that, try an ELM327 Bluetooth/OBDII adapter, and Torque (Free at first) on an Android phone or laptop with Bluetooth capability.

Not what I said.

Use something like the ELM327 adapter and Torque Free, you can query the ECU while it's running, "What ECT do you see? How's the MAP? You happy with the O2s? How fast is the engine cranking over at? What gear do you think you should be?" (Well, not in THAT form!)

And best of all, you don't have to see what it says while you're driving, you can datalog it and THEN examine it!

Truck won’t stay running long enough to do anything. And I don’t have access to the devices that you suggest I use.

An ELM327 adapter can be had for under $20. Torque Free is ... well, free.

Before you fire the parts cannon again, why not ask the ECU what it's doing?
