Default Hole in Bellhousing??

Hey guys,

I parked on a pretty good incline the other day and found a pretty nice sized puddle of ATF.
Looked under there and found this hole where the transmission meets the transfer case.
It is right along where a bolt goes through. I'm thinking had a bubble in the cast that finally gave way.

Have you seen this before? What do you think a fix is? Easy fix vs the actual proper fix?

Thanks guys

That's probably a drain hole in case a front seal blows (or the rear seal on the motor).

There shouldn't be any transmission fluid there anyway; time to get that transmission repaired or (with its age) properly rebuilt.

Rear seal on the trans is shot. You can drop the t-case, and change the seal, I think......

You can. Takes a special tool to swap the bushing (which is usually what's actually worn to take out the seal.)

I found that a 2" to 1" Galvanized coupler (female/female) fits the rear seals just peachy keen for driving one back on.

I broke down and bought a seal/bearing driver set..... Got tired of using sockets.

The PROBLEM is, the tailshaft sticks out of the extension housing a small bit. Well, on the 2WD transmission ...

HeyYou & RalphP. I appreciate the input. I'll let you know how it goes when I crack it apart.
Replaced the AC compressor, condenser, and evap coil yesterday so I'll take a few days before I tear into the transmission

Is that hole a drainage hole like RalphP said? Something that is there to let you know that the rear seal is probably blown or is that hole something I also need to address?

The hole is actually supposed to be there, though, I have no idea what its intended purpose really was.
