1988 Dodge Dakota - 6.2L Diesel Conversion?
700R4 behind a diesel? That really doesn't sound like a good idea......
They had a horrid reputation, even after the upgraded pump in the mid 80's. That said, I had over 200K on the stock trans in my Formula 350 (Firebird) when I sold it, and it still shifted perfect. I am thinkin' the diesel is gonna have more torque than my 350 was putting out though.....

Torque is the key that kills transmissions... And that 6.2 "according to the OP" only makes 240 tq.
As far as strength, its hard to beat a Turbo 400.... But the 700r4 does offer overdrive and he said fuel mileage is important.

Wow. Check, and those numbers are indeed correct.... I would question what was the point of a diesel with that little power...... No wonder they were dogs......
700R4 would survive that without a problem.

LOL Its actually a Detroit Diesel engine...... A little research will show you that Dodge themselves used Detroit Diesel engines from the factory!!
Alexander, I been trying to read up on other diesel engines for small trucks......
Have you considered and of the following?
1. Mercedes Benz....... Lots of cars built with the diesel, and automatic.
2. Postal Jeeps. Some of those were diesel's as well as using chrysler transmissions.
