Default Transmission question

I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota and I want to put a 5 Speed manual into it. Can I use one out of 2001 or 2002 Dakota or does it have to be out of the same generation? Will it bolt up to the 3.9 in the 91 that I have?

Can you use one? Possibly. Is your current truck 2WD or 4WD?

Will it bolt up? Depends on which motor it's behind - the 4.7 and 2.5 transmissions won't fit the 3.9, but the 3.9/5.2/5.9 transmissions will.

I put one out of a 04 with a 4.7 in mine (87) but mine is 4wd.
There are some differences. Let us know what you have so we can share the specifics.

Well for openers, I don't think you will have a way to hook up the speedometer. On the newer trucks its electronic and I think it feeds from the differential....
Are you planning to keep the 3.9?

I can use my GPS for that. But I just need to be able to drive it. And I'm not ****ing with these junk automatic transmissions anymore.

No, you can't just use your GPS.

The ECU relies on the VSS for several items to maintain the proper air/fuel mixture while under load.

And despite what you keep hearing from folks who don't believe in maintenance, Dodge transmissions aren't junk.

What IS junk is expecting them to "just run" when they do require preventative maintenance ...

(A 46RH/RE will hold up very well against, say, a 4L80E or even an AODE/4R70W ... and they're not impossible to build and take care of yourself! But eh.)

This truck has been swapped in the past and there's a lot of sketchy stuff on it. The transmission is going out. I'm 110% sure I won't need a VSS. I highly doubt there's one hooked up now. I drove it for a year and it was perfect. Shockingly great. But now it has problems shifting. It was originally a manual transmission truck. All I want to know is if the manual transmission from a 2001 or 2002 will blot up to the 90 or 91 3.9 V6 that in the truck now. If I have any other issues I'll deal with that later. The last person put transmission wires together with house wire nuts.

Brian, The transmission will bolt to the engine.....

Keep the following in mind.
Yours would have come with a NV2500 (I think) This was the 5 speed used with the LA style engines.
The 2000 and up is a NV3500. It is a heavier built transmission.
The NV3500 is one piece with the bell housing made with the case.
The Dakota version is different from the Ram. I think it is mainly shifter location.
Clip the backup light plug, as its different.
I had to make an adapter for the crossmember to the transmission. (Mine is 4wd)
Get the clutch fork, flywheel etc.
Get the shifter assy.
Clutch pedal etc, I dont know, I used my existing one.
Good luck and let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks. My reverse lights are on a toggle switch already. I'm sure we can get it going without too many issues.
