Default O2 sensor

Has anyone changed out their O2 sensor? Is it difficult? I was told that the connection is above the transmission will that mean I'll have to drop the transmission to reach it? I'm also upgrading my fuel injectors but that seems to be pretty straight forward. Thanks for any advise and tips!

What year, which motor? Shockingly, the exact placement and difficult changes somewhat from a 1987 2.2 to a 1996 5.2 ...

But for my 1988 3.9, it was a bit of a pain to get to. HOWEVER. The actually connection is up on the firewall, or can be; I'd cut the old sensor wiring off (after removing it from the exhaust pipe!) and tie that to the connector on the new one, then use that to haul the connector up to where you can unplug the old O2 sensor wiring and plug in the new O2 sensor wiring.

But I'm lazy that way.

I replaced my sensor a few years back. I soaked it daily in PB Blaster for several days prior (I don’t drive much so truck was sitting for awhile). Then I cut the wires to allow me to get a box wrench on the hex for maximum grip. Space was tight but doable. I used a trailer hitch for a cheater bar. LOL, it’s all I had at the time. But it worked. The sensor came off.

I replaced with a Bosch NGK cuz it is OEM for my ‘93, 5.2L. Heard other brands were risky.

Bosch was OEM????? I thought they were Denso, or NTK? I know the bosch sensors just don't work well on the full size trucks.

I stand corrected. I just checked my records and I installed an NGK that I understood was OEM for my '93. And yes, it was Bosch (among others) that exhibited issues in the Dakotas.
Amazon Amazon

Thank you for the correction, Sir. I hate when I post incorrect info.

I found out by making a fuss at NAPA that the NGK O2 sensor is in fact labelled NTK on the box they will give you when you ask for NGK? Shrug

On my 94 the plug end is draped over the trans. It has a plastic male part to pug into a detent in the body in a spot above the trans but that is so hard to get to even when you have it on jack stands mine is basically free floating on top of the trans. It was that way when I bought it. The other end away from the plug goes into the harness over on the driver side. I imagine it is easier to get at that OE location of you have a lift and can stand under the truck.
Anyway the wire from the harness will allow the plug over far enough you can connect it while laying down under there if it is not connected to the body and you have it up high enough.

When you look at it on Amazon it’s called NGK Brand. So therefore, I assume the company name is NTK. But what do I know?

Yea I could never figure it out. I don't recall exactly how but I satisfied myself, probably by reading on here, that NTK was the same thing.
