Default Tachometer on the Blink

The factory dash tach in the '96 Dakota Sport 4X4 3.9L five-speed is no longer accurate (was it ever?). Sometimes at idle it reads near zero and while accelerating sometimes it jumps up too high. Then later it kind of settles down. Just has a mind of its own these days. I'm not going to worry about it but thought I would mention it to the forum members.

I have never heard a good comment about the stock tacs. They are not very accurate, though when I connect the SnapOn and do the fuel sync it sits right on 1000 just as the SnapOn says it is. ???

Idling at an intersection my tach will read anywhere between 400-800 rpm. Whatever it’s feeling at the moment.

Default 1995 dodge dakota sport 4x4 Tachometer not moving!

Hello, I fired up the truck today and saw that the tachometer was not moving at all! just over night. never had any problems with it before at all! spent a little time and read on the web that the PCM was the problem and to change it out! gong to do a little more checking before i do that. every thing else is working fine. My radio has gone in and out a few times tho. when its out it's dead. can last a few days before it comes back on. I know if you do replace the PCM you need to get one with the same part number on it for you model truck and engine size no need to have it programed just be sure the number is the same. going to pull the battery out for the day and then reinstall it to see if this does some kind of a reset. ill get back to you all tomorrow and let you know if that did any thing..

Pulled the power and let it sit for the day, pulled the head lights on and turnd the ignition key on to start for 20 sec to be sure all power was drained. rehooked power back on and no change. My be the board behind the tachometer. ill be pullijng it next week and check the electrical connections. will get back to you all after that.
