Yeah, that's a misalignment. Either the gear is not coming out far enough from the starter, or something else isn't quite right. I would be tempted to warranty swap the starter.....

We're on the same wavelength. And sooner rather than later. It's a pain to swap that thing out but that's better than suffering the consequences of failure. And I am getting good at swapping it out.

Would you opt for the same starter or go with a different one. It's a Wai Global (NDENSO) starter. Just thinking if they pull the replacement from the same pallet it could be bad too. Maybe return it and go with Remy or somebody. Thoughts?

Yeah, a different manufacturer is probably a good idea.... provided their warranty will let you do that. The likelihood of any others from the same shipment having the same issue is indeed pretty high.

Just when you think you have solved a problem....

Well, I guess I did. Solved one problem, gained another. Why couldn't it at least be something easy to swap out?

What fun would that be?

RockAuto will give me a full refund for the NDENSO. Not for the shipping I paid for tho. Whatever. Ordered a Remy Gold starter. See that BBB Industries bought out Remy. Know Remy has had a decent reputation but don't know about BBB. Starter should be here Tuesday. Here we go again.

This is another reason I prefer to shop local when I can.... parts might cost a bit more, but, I don't pay for shipping, and if it doesn't work properly, I can take it back to the store, and swap it out same day....

Very true. My problem with the local parts stores (at least the ones around here) is they don’t always have the brand names I like or if they do the prices are insane. I admit I’m too picky sometimes but I do like to get OEM or at least a good name. Lots of times that means going online. I was fairly sure the OEM starter was Denso. My AdvancedAuto store near me has the CarQuest version that I believe is just a rebadged Denso but they get $185 + tax for it. RA was $111 incl tax and shipping. Too much of a difference. If it were $20 or something I would have paid it. Fortunately I’m retired and don’t need the truck every day. That makes a difference too.

Yeah, I can see your reasoning there, and it makes perfect sense. For me, my truck is the only vehicle I have, so, I can't have it down for any appreciable length of time, waiting for parts.

Was your 8.0 liter original equipment or did you do an engine swap somewhere along the way?
