Default Bad clutch or pressure plate?

1996 Dakota sport 3.9 2wd 5 speed AX15

Recently I was having trouble downshifting into second gear with my AX15. Then yesterday I was having a hard time shifting at all with a few gears grinding even with a double clutch. I pulled into a parking lot to get out of traffic and from there I couldn't even get any other gears besides first and reverse no matter what I tried. With the clutch pedal fully to the floor it felt like I was trying to float gears. With how heavy the traffic was I ended up calling my roadside assistance and getting towed.

This feels like a bad clutch pressure plate to me but I'm stumped as to why first and reverse were still so easy to get into with no grinding or anything. I know the previous owner of the truck who had it for 24 years never changed the clutch so I assumed it was on its way out but for it to quit that suddenly felt weird.

Maybe I broke some of the pressure plate fingers hitting some power shifts?

Either way I have a clutch kit on the way. Any tips for replacing? Or maybe you can explain why I could still get 1st and reverse. Thanks!

I don't think first and reverse are synchronized.... which would make me think it should be HARDER to get it into those gears, not easier.... but, it does indeed sound like time for the clutch, etc.
