Default 42RE to 42RH conversion

Hello all,

I have been researching a need help. I got my old high school truck (95 Dodge Dakota Sport, 3.9L, 2wd) and the gears are shredded in the transmission. I believe it’s a 42RH, and will drop it out soon to make sure. I found a 42RE out of a 96 Dakota at a salvage yard. I know there are issues with dodge upgrading valve bodies and computers between those years. My question is, since the gearing is all the same in the A500s, could I just swap the RH and RE valve bodies, or will that lead to issues?

RH is hydraulically controlled RE is electronically controlled. I believe the RE need the right computer to run properly.
There is a 95 and 96 factory service manual in the FAQ section which should give you the info you need.

You would need to replace pretty much ALL the electronics under the hood for the RE trans to work properly. RH trans was OBDI, RE trans is OBDII. The two systems are NOT compatible. Find another RH trans, or have yours rebuilt.
