Default 88 Rear diff help

Good morning friends

I have an 88 3.9L 2wd LE

any adverse weather conditions and my little truck is useless, so after i get better tires i was going to get a posi rear end.

I was wondering the easiest was to identify if i have the 7 1/4 or 8 1/4 rear end and how many splines my axels would have...27 or 29 seems to be the options?

and follow up to that, has anyone tried one of the spartan lockers found on rock auto,

thank you!

Don't know if the Equipment listing site goes back that far, but, worth a shot. (all caps please, it doesn't like lower case letters. ) Barring that, there are 'visual aids' scattered about the web with pics of the various rears, that should help you identify which one you have.

The lunchbox lockers are a cheap alternative to buying the whole carrier assembly. They DO work, though, you will know it is there.....

usually, the easiest way to determine different size rear ends is to compare the cover gaskets......
