it is difficult to get a stock 3.9 to peel out unless you stop on a hill, or power-brake. once your tires break loose you can spin them fairly easy but the stock 3.9's just dont got the ***** to smoke the tires. I'm a power junky so what I did was I put a 360 in my dakota 2wd single cab, well not yet but i have the motor just need to find the time to do the swap. a 318 will give you plenty of power as well, more than you would need actually i chose the 360 for racing is all. but if you want to keep your 3.9 and still want to do burnouts, just go to your local parts store and buy some linelocks, you put these in your brakelines and when you push your brakes you engage the locks and then release your brakes, what this does is keeps your front brakes engaged but lets your rear breaks free so your friends think your burning out but it's just a powerbrake in disguise.

i don't think it should be that bad, mines a 3.9 with a 5 speed and i accidentaly peel out around corners in second with out the cluch all the time. first off has the ehaust been changed at all, loss of back pressure can drop low end torque. i would suggest doing all the mantinance, oil, tranny fluid (if it's an auto), coolant, gas treatment (lucas is my favorite), fuel filter, cap, rotor, plug wires (borg warner is great for the last three), plugs (autolites or bosch), air filter (k&n is a good investment either the drop in or an open element kit), and if your ambitious the differential fluid and axle bearings. of course like he said they dont have all that much power so don't expect a race car.

i did a complete tune up on it already, and i changed all the fuilds, I also have a LSD on mine so it'll be harder to burn out, I am not keeping this motor for to much long probaly for 2 or 3 months more, going put a 383 or 440 in it, i already have the motors and tranny i just need to buy mounts

I have a 93 sport 5 sd 4x4 with a 3.9. I also can spin them in second around corners. i have posi in the rear end and from a dead stop with out droping the cluch i can spin them through 3rd. and i have goodyear at/s on it. can't leave smoke behind though.

i can burn out in a straight line, uphill. went to willow springs (ca) for a test/tune day and did burn outs all day, only regret that i burned up a set of new tires.

A new 3.9L will smoke up tires without any problem. The years of mileage puts a hurtin on them.

Your burnouts depend on what ratio rear end you have. If you have the 3.93 you'll have great acceleration but if its the 3.55 your power is greatly affected.

I have an 88 dakota 3.9, some times it will have power and spin the tires when ever I give it gas, then some times it wont even spin at all. I put on a flowmaster and custom intake and smaller tires and she spins all the time now. It sucks cause now im on my second rear end.
