hey guys im new to this forum, I recently aquired a free 1992 dakota 2wheel drive with a 318 for free from a co-worker who was going to scrap it. The truck odometer stoped at 358,000km but he suspects its almost to 400,000. We have E-test laws here so EGR, PCV, O2, filter, rotor + cap, plugs, wires, etc have been changed within a year with all new exhaust. The rear end was changed from a posi to a slip because his son broke it. The truck has no mirrors and a lose front end due to his son driving it through the forest and corn fields like a raging idiot redlining it and giving it some quite artistic dent designs down the fenders and door panels. The windshield is smashed from the hood flying up twice on a 5 hour drive and there is rust above all the wheels and on the bottom of the tailgate. All brake parts need to be replaced when i picked up the truck i put on a new caliper but couldnt bleed any of the others and drove it home 45min away with no brakes, this includes calipers, rotors, combi kit, pads and shoes and e-brake cable system.

Despite its ugly appearance this truck runs extremely well, aside from the lose steering probably from hitting a rock in afield and the highbeams staying on even when the truck is off. Seriously, this thing sounds brand new and i did a burnout around a corner and down the street for about 300 meters easy! I'm going to get new fenders, hood, tailgate, brakes and try to cut out the above the back wheels and fix it as best i can but i need some information on the headlight problem and the steering problem that i'm going to try to explain now... The steering is fine if i keep the wheel a touch to the left but as soon as i turn right even slightly the wheel turns right about at least 1/8 of a turn and bounces off and turns the other way over and over until i pass that point or turn left again.

I guess I've typed quite a bit now and I still have things to say but I'd like some input from you guys for some ideas or ways i can get this thing going and really performing as cost and time effective as I can. Thanks in advance!

 

First of all, welcome to the forum. I hope you find what you need here.

Please see attached picture to see if the dimmer switch is the problem with the headlights.

As for the steering, I wouldn't be suprized if the components are worn out. Ball joints, tie rods.

Sounds like the truck just needs some TLC, evidently something the last person didn't give it. But ya can't beat the price! Good luck, and let us know what ya find out.

I have a rust free bed for a 1st gen cheap it's a long bed lemme know changing beds is easier than removing rust

 

sounds like you got a good truck. atleast if you have to put a bit more into it then it's worth it. lets see some pics of this beast.

lol you guys seem like nice people and yes boomer i am very interested in a new box because i took another look and god damn it wont be easy for sure! are you in the ottawa area? as for the pictures i guess i could go take some now with my girlfriends camera phone! probably do that today and thanks also for the dimmer switch diagram i'm gonna get working on that!
