mandatory insurance y or n
I'm just wondering how many of my fellow forum junkies think that mandatory insurance laws have created a more dangerous driver simply because drivers know they are going to be "taken care of" in the event of an accident??

I feel, if anything, it would have created slightly better drivers.
You get in an accident, yea, your "taken care of," but you also get an insurance hike.
Get in an accident without insurance andvolunteer to pay the persons medical bills or car repairs out of pocket and see what that costs.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should be able to charge an arm and a leg for insurance (I pay $1200/6 months, or 1/6th ofmy salary).
ok. I pay $600/month on my 99 dakota. and $150/month on my 88. I think what they are charging now is gettin stupid. every time my insurance comes up for a renual it goes up. sure I have a couple tickets and an accident, but im getting sick of them. you have to have insurance, but if you ever have to put a claim through it, they will then charge you more for insurance.
if it wasnt mandatory to have insurance. I wouldnt have it. I think I would rather save my 6 grand a year and put it towards payin my truck off. or atleast something worth while.

thanx for your responses guys this is the kind of reactions I expected.Dodgerules, my point is simply this if we did not have mandatory insurance and were required to replace the vehicles out of our own pockets we would be better drivers just because we would be more attentive and cautious.I'm fortunate in that my insurance is extremely affordable (about 1/6) the amount yall pay still I don't like being told I have to have it especially since I have never had an accident "knock on wood"...I feel laws like that infringe upon my right to choose same as seatbelt laws again where are our rights going??
But...think of it this way.....lets say you get into an accident the other guy doesn't have insurance and he can't pay because he don't have a job...you'll be taking it in the shorts...but if you have insurance you can be convered if not the other person is in big trouble...i don't mind having insurance i just find it stupid that i have to have full coverage on a vehical if i get a loan over 3 grand
I wouldn't have an issue with mandatory insurance... if it was actually mandatory. Do you have ANY idea of how many driver's drive WITHOUT insurance? I see it daily and sometimes it creates income for me when thecoptires of it. Also, when they made it mandatory to have insurance does anyone else remember the costs of the policies going up? I do... When I was younger (even with a clean record) my insurance note was $42 dollars more a month than my car NOTE was.

exactly mandatory I personally do not agree with and yes I do remember the rate hikes. The insurance industry has us by the short hairs when it comes to what they to charge for something they hope we won't use, then if we do need to use the benefits we have paid for they want to give as little as possible. As for the un insured and underinsured motorist, true threr are a ton of them and they do make life difficult for all of us.However at the same time if insurance were more affordable maybe these people would have the coverage they need.At the end of the day it really has nothing to do with protection for you its all about money always has been and always will be....

Sure, the cost of insurance is probably the leading cause of people not carrying insurance.
I'm not defending insurance costs (I can find much better things to spend $2400 a year on, believe me!!), but I do believe it should be kept manditory.
Of course, since its manditory, the insurance companies, being the dicks they are, can charge outrageous amounts. And than when you need to use the insurance to cover costs, they become cheap bastards. Been there done that.
Being 22, ive paid car insurance since i was 16 and they've never paid a dime for me, thankfully its down to a mere 250 for 6 monthes for liability, which is fine by me, because if I do make a mistake, thats a small price to pay as to what could happen.
As for it being manditory, i disagree, If you have a certain amount in the bank i think it should be fine, My liability allows i think it is 100,000 for other peoples injuries, if you have that in the bank, no reason for insurance, otherwise, i agree with it, just so you know the bill will be paid.
Insurance is just that, there when ya need it, so you dont go broke tryin ta cover something when you make a mistake, its bound to happen to us all.

another issue that has come up with insurance is that they will price you a quote and everything will go thru at a great rate. THEN they will ask for proof of prior insurance and look up your record etc, then 2 months later your rates will go up check http://www.oneshopinsurance.com i got to see different insurance companies price.
