reset maintenance light
Hello, I have an 89 dakota, and after i put in a new transmission the maintenance light stays on. I've checked everthing and it needed a new speed sensor for the overdrive. Kragen says it just needs reset, my question is, how do i reset it myself without having to go to the dealer and pay $50 for one minutes worth of work? I've disconnected the battery umpteen times, so thats not the way to reset it. Thanks for any help, and if the dealer is in fact the only way to reset it, please let me know that too. Also, Kragen didnt know how to reset it, if it comes up what'd Kragensay to do.
The lights on theseusually go off when the problem is fixed, check grounds and all the dum-dum stuff. Had a similar problem where my light would not stay off, traced it to a ground wire with poor continuity
The maintenance required light(MRL), not to be confused with the check engine light, only has to do with emissions crap.
The MRL comes at a certain number of miles to indicated the(supposed) needto change certain emissions systems stuff. NOTE: The MRL light being on does not indicate there is a problem with the emissions system, the check engine light will come on for that reason.
As far as I know, the only way to turn the lightoff is to connect a special Chrysler tool (called the DRBII) to the vehicle.
Simply removing that light will suffice, as it does not alert you to anything being wrong with the vehicle.

thank you! Ya, it's not emissions because i had a smog done here in california and it passed with flying colors. Also, it is the maintenance light and not the check engine. So i need to track down this tool your talking about then. thanks for the help.
Hey. On my '08 Big Horn 4x4 5.7 the check engine light has been on. Codes are both for the EGR valve, stuck closed it says. I put a brand new one on, two bolts and a plug lol, but the light is still on. My inspection station guy couldn't get it to go out and he said to unhook the pos cable for 10 minutes. I thought it was the neg cable your supposed to unhook? Anyway, I don't want to just get it to go out, i want the code to expire so it will pass inspection. So, what now? Thanks for the help!

Need to clear the codes, which, unfortunately, will also clear all your monitors, and it will be a bit before it'll pass inspection. Disconnect the negative cable, turn on the headlights, turn off the headlights, hook the battery back up. Should clear codes.

Or, if it doesn't then how many miles will I need to drive it before it will pass the inspection.
My guy mentioned 60 miles. Is this right? I ask because this is my "farm" truck and it is only driven 30-50 miles a month.
Thanks all for the help!

If the light comes back on, then there is still a problem somewhere. Gonna have to chase it.
The monitors are more concerned about drive cycles, than mileage. They tend to be pretty specific, and I am not entirely sure what your truck is going to want.

If you want to know what your truck wants, ask it.
Pick up something like a generic ELM327 OBDII/Bluetooth adapter, install Torque (Free or Pro; Pro's cheap, under $10 - last time I actually checked, under $5!) on your Android device, and ask it!
