Coolant Temp Problem

Coolant Temp Problem
My engine coolant gauge indicates that the temp is way too hot, it's all the way to the right. It then comes back into normal range, sometimes going up and down in temp. This is at city driving speeds. It does not do this when driving on the highway. It has not boiled over either. I have already put in a new thermostat with no change. What is my next step? Is there a sensor somewhere?
Thanks.

RE: Coolant Temp Problem
At highway speeds you are pushing enough air to keep it cool. That is why it is okay then. If at city speeds you are all the way to the right, I'd get it taken care of right away. Running to hot is very bad long term ans something is obviously wrong.
Bad stat, low fluid, blockage, etc.
