Default Transfer case

Well I went out wheeling on Thurs.with Steve05Ram360 and had a great time. At the end of the day I bottomed out a little bit and right after that my transfer case started making a weird whining sound. I looked under there and the only thing I hit was the front cross member. The sound was very slight and I took it out of 4WD and it would not make any noise except in reverse. I went down the trail as far as I could without popping it back into 4wd but ended up having to again and it sounded fine for a little bit but then started making the same high pitched whine instead of the normal low whine. I am going to have the fluid changed on weds. and was wondering if all the dust in the air could have caused the whine from getting into te TC and it just needs some fresh fluid? It is extremely dusty where we went because of the lack of rain and I have a nasty layer of dust on the inside of the D to prove it. Anyway here's a link to Steve's post with pics of the trip. https://dodgeforum.com/m_894545/tm.htm

Could be something hitting the front driveshaft out of the TC. I did the same thing and had that sinking feeling in my gut. I put my truck up on blocks and saw some piece of metal, possibly sheared off from the cross member, hitting the drive shaft. I ground it off, and no noise.

Just a thought,

Well that's a though, thanks. I just got on my hands and knees (I just got off of work and don't need to mess up my good clothes so I didn't crawl under there) and was looking around and saw nothing. One thing I've noticed after the run was that my brakes are very touchy and they pull to the right, I'm thinking an alignment is in order but why the touchy brakes? WhenI got home that night I was turning right to back into my space and I just locked up my brakes on accident. I chalked it up to being tired but the last couple days it's still very touchy so I know that isn't the case.

I doubt that dirt in the fluid is going to cause any noise like what you have. chances are it was a noise that was about to start anyway, there was only 1 section that was really an issue... is it possible you tore a cv boot??? if so it wouldnt take much to cause a problem in the dusty conditions we were in...I think you have them if I remember correctly... (not 100% sure)

btw, did you get the pics?

I got the pics and it's all a possibility there. I do have cv boots, from what I saw they were intact but I just need to get way under the D to get a good idea of what the issue was. I was figuring if I could find a shop that would put it on a lift with the engine running in 4wd it would be NP to pinpoint exactly where the noise is. Oh and what are you doing up so late??? I'm stuck working a double myself (my coworker called in sick and nowone knows how to do my job)... [:'(]

I honestly dont think it has anythign to do wit your TC. There isnt anything in there that is different for reverse or forward. I know this because i just had to rebuild my TC in my 98 Durango. I would have to assume its in your transmission because if it ws a driveshaft.. they spin from the wheels spinning wether in forward reverse or 4wheel or 2 wheel. So the ONLY thing that is different is the transmission. everything else is the same unless the hard clunk you heard might have bent the TC or trans out of alighnment?
