Rear Diff.
How do I know if I have a Limited Slip Differential on the used Durango I bought. It is a SLT+ 4x4 with a 5.9 3.55 axle. Just curious to know so I can add 4 ounces of friction modifier if necessary. Thanks.
I always test by simply applying the brakes and then putting the gas pedal all the way to the floor! If only one tires spins, you don't have posi or the posi unit is damaged! You can also just take the differential cover off and look. Here's what my posi unit looks like:

A less damaging way to see what you have is:
Look at the sticker that should be in your glove box. It should tell axle ratios as well as have the words Anti Spin there somwhere if you have the LS.
Look behind the driver side rear wheel on the axle tube for a white banded label that should have the same info.
Email your vin # DC customer care and they will email you a build sheet telling you what your D was built with.

If anyone ever has a doubt weather they have limited slip (POSI) or not. Block the front tires, juck up the rear so both rear tires are off the ground. Put the trans in neutral and turn one tire or the other. If both tires turn the same direction, you have a posi. Turn different directions, you have an open diff. Hope this helps.

The tire thing where you jack it up does NOT work on all vehicles. Alot of posi units don't engage till there is a "load" put on them and then the clutches engage. They act as a open differential until the load engages the clutches. And the build sheet doesn't always help. If you're buying a used vehicle, someone could have installed a posi unit or switched out the rear end. Easiest way to test, BRAKE TORQUE IT! If you don't want to smoke your pretty little tires, take the differential cover off. Most people neglect to change the differential fluid anyways.
