Help! 99 Durango dies out while running
Hello!
Im a frustrated Durango owner. hehe, Im here to figure out what's wrong with my truck since I have seen a few of you with the same problem as I do.
My durango has low mileage witha few modifications (I don't think this is the cause). Sometimes while driving it dies out completely then all the dash lights goon. And where the mileage is supposed to go it says NO BUS. My neighbor plugged in his OCM (?) and tells me that the computer says that nothings wrong.
Something is wrong because it dies out!
I called the Waipahu Dodge dealership to inquire about the computer copilot. During my first call the service specialist a female didn't know whatin the world I was talking about. All she could do was suggest that I bring in my truck to get properly diagnosed by a certified tech. So I asked her what does the diagnosticinvolve. And she replied that they'll hook it up to the computer and the computer will tell them what wrong. Uh! Hello, I just told you the computer won't tell you anything because it resets it's self when itdoes that NO BUS thing. Sowe both ended the call frustrated.
So I called right back. Duh! I didn't get an answer about the copilot. Well, the guy who answered the phone said he could help me since she was "busy". I explained what was happening with my truck and explained that unless they had the copilot on while the problem occurred, that they will probably never find out whats goingon with my truck. And I'll just end up taking it back in over and over again for the same problem. And I still have to pay for the initial diagnostic test even if they never find out whats wrong.
That pissed me off! What a waste of my time! So I asked, who will be liable if I crash when I leave your service center with the"all clear"? I guess that pissed him off because he told me to go and call the other dealerships on the island and find out their policy.
At this point Im like what the hell. So I ask him how much will this all be? Then I get "only special regular customers or customers with warrenty" will be approved to use their copiolt.
So have any of you ever figure out what wrong with your truck. Anything short of buying a new computer? Im really thinking about it now.
Thanks!

Seaof thedead~
Hmm. Everything runs fine with my truck. Well except for the dying out part.
What's going on with your headlights and AC?
Is this another problem that I should look forward to?
I have already had problems with my window relay switch wire coming loose 2 times. Both of my wheel speed sensors went out, but this is a given since my truck is lifted.
Funny thing tho, as soon as I complained to my Hubby about it acting up again. It has not died out since then. But then again out of handful of times that he has driven my truck (with the dying out issue) it has only died out on him once. This is what makes me think that my problem may have something to do with fuel since he has somewhat of a lead foot. Im more of a gas it when you need it.
Buy the way, when was the last time you changed your cap and rotor? I need to do mine since it has never been done. How hard was it? My Hubby said that I'll need to do it because it's in a small space and my arm is small and flexible enough to do it. Im willing but, small spaces = busted knuckles. Ouch!

Otherwise sunshine, do a search in the durango forum for "no bus", you will get several threads relating to this, but this one I found seem to have more details.

You may have a sensor taking the bus system down and causing the engine to die. If you have a 5.2 or 5.9 engine you could have a bad crank sensor , I do know that the 2000 and up 4.7 engine are having problems with crank sensors.

I'll check out those threads and do a search for more info.
Master tech~
Do you think the ODM-OCM (can't remember the actual letters) willcatch the computer error code? My neighbors thingy is still saying noerror code...
Im starting to find out that the possibilities are endless for this NO BUSissue. Freakin sensors!

Ah! Just as I thought Master tech.
Do you think the copilot would catch the crank sensor code? From what I understand I need to push the button just before my truck dies out.
The problem is, I can't tell if my truck is doing a soft shift or on it's way to die out. The best way that I can explain it is, it feels like a slight misfire or a little thump-bump.
On another note, I read a thread somewhere here that the no bus problem could also be linked to the injectors. Im the second owner of my truck (purchased at 24k miles) and the first owner had a bright idea to bore out the injectors so that it would feed more fuel into the engine. I don't think that he knew that the truck computer would compensate or adjust other thingsbecauseof the extra fuel.
I love my truck! She's a heavy beast but she has never gotten me stuck on the sand or in the mud. Not as nimble as the smaller trucks but she does the job right! Thebiggest plus is my whole family (my doggie too)can enjoy four wheeling in AC.My poor doggie always got mud in her eyes (and everything else)riding in the back of our Toyota.
