Default 727 tranny

Hey guys I was informed that a 727 tranny would bolt right up to my D with minimal issues and the guy that told me (a gearhead in my diesel classes) knows someone that has a built 727 for $200. Should I jump?

I don't know anything about the 727. Just from my brief google about it I see that it is the older 3 speed. Probably more simple than ours? What is it going to take to switch it over? What is the final drive ratio? They are cheap.

since your pcmcontrols your transmission and you'd be switching to a full mechanical trans, i'm sure you'll need some pcm editing to delete the transmission controls, otherwise it may not let your engine run at all.

you'll lose O/D and your fuel mileage will likely suffer, if you want a preview of what it'd be like, try taking ahigher speedtrip on the highway with the o/d off.

other than that, maybe tweak a few mounts for the trans, and driveshafts may need to be lengthened/shortened.and that really should be it.

spidaman over in the dak section had a 727 in his R/T. im pretty sure he bought it like that though. but he just wrapped it around a tree acouple weeks ago and wrote it off. I dont know how much work they are to put in. but when they are built right, they are pretty much bullet proof.

To all,
New guy here...
I'm trying to go the other way, from a 727 to an overdrive tranny. I want to find out which automatic overdrive will fit in my '73 Dodge Van, B 200, w/ 318 engine. It would have to be a non-electronic type, 'cause I ain't got none (just neutral saftey and backup light). Also, I need to know about the converter; is it a 'balanced' type or what? I also understand the the kickdown linkage may be different?
What I need to know is the number designation, or year model ranges that will fit,so I can look for one at my local Pic-n-Pull junkyard...
Someone out there must know...
Thanks a lot for any information ya can give me..

Mo

Hmmm,

I have a '99 D w/ 5.9 (original owner) and have always been told it has the 727 variant in it? Perhaps, the tranny guy was saying it was essentially the "next generation" version.

db,
Thanks for that info, but I think yer tranny has electronics?? Because my '73 has none, I wonder if they made a non-electronic version of the overdrive 727?
What I guess I need is someone who works in a tranny shop who could look up the year(s) and model types that used 'em...
Can anybody help me?
Thanks in advance,
Mo

What I really need is the model(s) and year(s) that they were used, so I know what to look for when I go to my local "Pic-n-Pull" junkyard.
Thanks.
