I Think my 2003 Durango is Haunted
ok where to start: this morning i left for work and got about half way there and the turn signal arrows on the inst pannel were lighted up slightly , then i heard a chime sound , thena few more miles down the road my dash lights went out and i also lost my running lights on the outside of the truck . and when iapplied the brake pedal the dash lights would light up and the turn signal arrows get would gettwice as bright,at work i checked the fuse for theinsturment lights and it was blown so i changed it ..
on the way home i made it1/3 of the way then on came the
turn signals arrows lighting up again but no chime this time.
then dash lights went out again andthen a few more miles down the road i would step on my the brake pedal and the dash lights would light up again ,and at a stop and golight, the fuse for my brake lights blewtoo ,then i put on my flashers but that only lasted so long as as i was at a stop and go light the fuse blew for theflashers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
looking for any and all idea's here
PS i do have wiring harness hooked up in back which is spliced
in , but i have not touched the harness since fall , so not sure if that might be the cause of my haunted truck

last springthe dodge dealer sent me to where they send all therecustomers who want hitches or wiring harnesses installed and theysold me awiring kit that i hookedup for my lund boat trailer , which uses those blue splice links to hook the pig tail wiring to the trucks brake , running and turn signals.ground etc..
after i was done everything work fine all summer not one problem with any of my lights on the truck or my shorelander traileruntil now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have hooked these things up a million times over the yearsand never had a problem on any of my cars or trucks
at first when i went to therepair place i was looking for a tee to plug into the durango's brakeharness ,but they replied this is what they install on all there customers cars and trucks
and to this day i still am unable to locate that harness where a tee would plug in , cant find it under the truck or on the inside rear area anywhere..

First things first, my name is Mike. I'm a first time poster, and a couple year Durango owner and this seems like the place to be with dodge questions! Now, on to the question...
I have the same issue with my 2001 durango, however the harness for the trailer lights isn't the problem. I cut that out and replaced it however when the brake is applied the running lights come on very dimly and the lights on the dash go from being bright to low powered. After playing with the wiring I found out that everything works fine (on the truck and trailer) until the line for the brake is added to the equation. Could there be a short in this wire and does anyone know how to go about fixing it? The vehicle isn't worth taking it to the dealer to get fixed so if anyone knows an easy way around this it would be appreciated. Thanks for any help!

First off there is at least a 4 flat wire coiled up between the drivers side frame and the spare tire that is already installed even if you don't have a factory tow package. Look really hard for it) This is why they don't make a factory T like most other trucks.....It's already there!
skitz<------- Welcome to the forum! This sounds like a bad connection or a bad ground. From the way your are talking about this problem it only happens when you are plugged in to the trailer. This should be a bad ground. Check your connections and lines on the trailer because it soulds like your shorting out or you made an incorrect entree on the harness to trailer side.

Thanks for the reply! I was able to take a look at it again this evening and found out the ground is not the problem. I ran the ground straight to the negative terminal on the battery and it was still acting up.
However, when I unplug the harness for the trailer lights from the socket on the truck, everything works fine. I can then plug the trailer light harness back into the left tail light and everything works perfectly (As long as the wire for the trailer brake light is disconnected). As soon as this is added, the dash lights go crazy and the running lights turn on when the brake is pressed in the truck. This all happens without the truck being plugged into the trailer unfortunately. I have even tried running the brake lights straight to a trailer and bypassing the connectors and this still doesn't do it. Could I have a short in the brake light wire on the truck? I'm from Buffalo and the salt here does a number on our vehicles so it wouldn't surprise me if the wire has been chewed up.
