How to improve MPG
Schusterjo,
This topic about electric fans has been thoroughly discussed. Before deciding to go to electric fan, make sure you know what you use your Durango for. If it is just hauling passengers and maybe some very very light towing, electric fan is a good replacement. but for any medium to heaving towing, we do not recommend replacing the clutch fan for Efan. Otherwise, you may have to replace the radiator for one that is very very high effiicency that can still cool an engine while towing.
So far, we figure from a user here, that dual 12's running very low amperage motors can push close to 6000 cfm's.

Just a heads up on gasoline. It is a fact that gas that contains ethanol does not give the same gas mileage as pure gasoline. I have found that when I used gas with ethanol I lose 3-4 mpg. Now that gas is cheaper, I check the pumps to see if it contains ethanol. If so, I drive on. I have also found that Conoco is one of the brands that does not use ethanol gasoline. I know there are others, but be careful. I have a suspicion that ethanol also glogs up the injector nozzles.
I also read on the internet that adding acetone to the gas at the rate of 1 oz/10gals breaks the adhesion of the gas molecules and lets it burn more efficiently, thereby giving better mileage. I have tried this, especially when pulling the camper trailer, and it seems to work. However, I don't use it all the time.

Okay I am going to post this information. if you decide to run it do at your own risk and don't blame me if you have issues. (I would not)

Acetone added to regular gas. (Not premium)
I have been running mileage test over the past 2 months and here is what I have found.
My FJ will get
1. About 18 miles per gallon when I fill with regular. (288 miles per 16 gal)(Runs but noticeably less power.)
2. About 19 miles per gallon when I fill with premium.(304 miles per 16 gal)(Runs well)
3. About 21 miles per gallon when I add 6oz of acetone with regular. (336 miles per 16 gal)(Runs Great. Better then normal premium.)
4. About 19 miles per gallon when I fill with premium and add 6oz of acetone. (304 miles per 16 gal)(Runs well but no extra mileage.)
OK so you say only 2 mpg better is not much but I am also saving 20 cents per gallon on the gas and getting 10.5% better mileage over normal premium gas.
16 gal x .20cents = $3.20 saved on the gas per filling.
32 more miles per fill = 32/19=1.68 gals = $5.04 with $3.00 gas.
So now I have seen,
$3.20 + $5.03 = $8.23 saved with every tank of gas.
Acetone cost $13. per gallon which is .61 cents per filling.
I fill at least every week so I save,
$7.62 x 52 = $396.24 per year.
I keep my cars about 10 years so that is $3962.40 saved over the time I will own my FJ. Not Bad!

There are some that say the acetone will cause rubber to swell and I am sure that in high concentrations it will but I am adding only 0.3% acetone to each gallon of gas.
As I know acetone will eat some plastic products and damage the paint, I refill a 6oz finger nail remover bottle and only keep this in my FJ. It is the perfect amount for a full tank refill and the plastic is for acetone.
For all of my testing, I filled at the same pump and did not top off after the pump stopped.

This is basically the stuff fingernail polish is made out of.. Has to be 100% pure Acetone
Some say it may damage seals in your engine but others say it will not..

gr8scott,
I do recommend a K&N filter over a paper filter anyday, not mainly because of the slight mpg saving, but because of the longterm savings of having to continously replace the paper filters. I usually change out my paper filters in DFW area annually. You count the cost of around $15-$20 a pop, over a period of 9 years that I own my D, it would have costed me close to $200. But I replaced it with a OEM K&N. To this day, it's still the original, just take it out of the box and wash it every 20k or whenever it starts to look dirty. Bought this OEM K&N filter for $55 from NAPA.
So get the best of both worlds, K&N can get you up to 1 mpg better fuel savings as well as long term savings of not having to constantly buy new filters. Plus, you will feel a little quicker throttle response too.

Even then, the paper filters are more like $8 or $9.
K&N is $55 plus another $10 for recharge kit puts it at $65 divided by $9 is 7.23 years before you break even.
I'm not saying the K&N is a bad thing. It just takes awhile to be worth it.
Well, most people don't keep vehicles 9 years.

But you got to remember that with paper filters, an average driver would normally have to change it twice a year if they put in an avg of 12-15k per year. so actually, you can break even in 3-4 years but remember the slight fuel savings you get so I will just guess, take another year off on top of that.
Normally, you don't have to clean a K&N filter until 20k-30k miles under normal driving conditions. But I clean mine every 10k regardless just to keep with easy memory of mainteance.
My Durango gained an average of 1 mpg better gas mileage using K&N vs paper. I also get a better throttle response with K&N.

This is true, ethanol is a dirty fuel and does not burn as well. I know Amaco (BP now) was one who didn't have ethanol (I think they do now) Phillip 66 was one (good luck and finding one).. You also need to watch out for how much, some are 20%,15%,10%... if you constantly run this in your car you need to run fuel injector cleaner in it often.
Okay I am going to post this information. if you decide to run it do at your own risk and don't blame me if you have issues. (I would not)

the octane rating is NOT a indication of stronger gas... 87 and 93 will give you same mpg and rage; the octane relates to the burn in the combustion chamber. Scishow does a good informative YouTube video on octane ratings.
Higher octane will allow you to run more timing, which increases power. Of course, that assumes that your injection system includes a knock sensor, which a lot of the older engines do not.
