Hey guys, I'm getting a code of P0420. Does this mean that I need to replace my cat converter or just replace the oxygen sensor?

Convertors rarely go bad. Usually the 02 sensor croaks, or there is an issue with its wiring.

If is does turn out to be a convertor, they are warranted for 8yrs and 80k. Hopefully that will help if needed.

Grab ahold of the converter (when its cool) and give it a good shake. If you hear anything moving around in there its probably bad. If you dont id look into the 02 first.

 

Sorry about that! It's a 01 Durango 4.7 with around 98,000 miles on it. Check engine light has been on for a while now. Checked the codes and I'm getting a P0420. I've called my local muffler place to see what it would cost to replace the cat converter, but if there's a cheaper option that would fix the problem, I'd rather do that!

As you may already know, the code indicates calalyst efficiency below threshold.

Since the downstream 02 is what monitors this, I would go in with a new downstream 02, and see if that takes care of it.

While it is possible that your convertor is bad, they rarely do unless there is some type of engine fuel system malfuction which ends up putting alot of unburned fuel into it.

You can go with a Bosch unit from your local AZ, or spend a few more bucks and get OEM from Dodge.

I would think that either one will be fine.

PO420 is the cat.Dodges do seem to go through cats rather easily. The converter can be bad and not broken up inside yet.First it will melt down and clog up inside,then it will start to break apart.98,000 miles is not un-common to see the cat bad.

I would replace it and also have the rear O2 tested to see how it is reading,but more likely the cat.An exhaust shop should be able to replace this for about $250-$300 installed.Best to shop around.

or just cut the cat out and run a straight pipe. sounds good!!

 

Don't cut it or you have to run open loop. It's better to just fix it right the first time.

 

Thanks guys! The guy I spoke with at the muffler shop gave me a price of $225 for single inlet and $289 for double inlet. So I guess that sounds about right. Any way to tell which mine is?

 

Just look under the vehicle.It will either have 2 pipes coming into the front of it or one.

Whats the year and engine size?
