Thumbs up Remove front axles better mpg?

Got a question...I have a 98 Durango 4x4 with bad cv boots that are leaking. So here is what I am thinking... I know I have to replace the boots and or the axles, I it possible to remove the 2 axle shafts completely and run with out them? Is the load of the vehicle carried on the front hubs and not the axles? If so I would like to just take them off and possibly save some mph not having the front diff. turning all the time.

Ok you experts, so what do you think? I don't take it off road anymore and it would save some money in a couple different ways.

Thumper:
Two reasons not to do this.

#1. There will be no measureable change in mpg. The majority of the 4x4 systems weight will still be there.

#2. The front bearings depend on the pressure of the axleshaft being installed to keep the bearing from self destructing.

You might make it a block or two if you try to drive w/out the shafts installed.

thanks for the input quys, not such a good idea.
So how hard is it to put new or rebuilt axleshafts in. I have heard from very ez to very difficult. How many have exchanged these out?

I'm fairly mechanical but could use some helpful hints.
Thanks

I have seen a case in an Audi where the guy JUST installed new wheel bearings. While he had his front axles out of the car, he pushed his car a total of 20 feet... Needless to say, he needed to do the wheel bearings yet again... At $160 a peice, they ain't cheap... Good thing they are cheap for the D!

It shouldn't be too hard... Just get a manual...

Yet another reason you don't touch them...
