Needing help with O2 sensor and codes
I have a '01 durango with a 4.7 was throwing the code P0171. I replaced the O2 sensor located after the catalytic converter and had the code reset and it keeps coming back. Is there another O2 sensor that i am missing that needs replaced? I am getting alot of smell out of the exhaust. I know the catalytic converter is clean so that is not the problem. Someone please help!!
I had that code and I just needed to replace the plugs. Any time you have a lean or rich mixture pull the plugs and they will tell you a story as to what is going on inside your combustion chambers. Mine told me that I was doing too much in town short trip driving.
Thanks for your help. It does get alot of short town trips on it. I was also wondering if this would also cause a surging at about 45 or if i need to also check my TPS? Any suggestions on the best plugs to get for it?
Check the TPS on the surging issue but wait until after the plug change to see if anything changes first. I actually got (kind of) lucky with my code. The D started running rough and threw the code about 2 blocks from the place I was taking it for the emissions testing. that would have been a waste of $20. I ended up being late for my registration but I just let them know that I wasn't driving it at the time.
As for plugs I would suggest plain old OEM champions (or Champion truck plugs). if anyone tries to sell you anything else tell them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. A lot of the guys at parts stores think Bosch plat's are the way to go.

Yea I reset the computer on it and the next day it thru the bank 1 o2 senser code. Replaced that and it ran good for 4 days and then thru some more codes. 1 of them had to do with #7 coil. I pulled the new plug and it was black where it had not been firing. Checked out the coil and it tested to the specs I got. Replaced the plug and reset the computer and it runs great now once again. I am just waiting now to see what it is going to do to me next.
