Default 99 Durango 5.2 4x4 did not want to shift above 3000 rpm

I got stuck in traffic the other day for about 20-30 minutes. It was the usual stop and go. As soon as we got into the clear, everything was seeming fine and acting normal. Then I tried to pass someone, I think I was doing about 60 and floored it. Vehicle went to 3000 rpm and stayed there, nothing... Let go, tried again, shot to 3000 again and didn't down shift... Did it ONE more time and it finally gave in... Down shifted and took off. Ever since then it seems rough when it downshifts and also doesn't downshift soon enough it feels. Is there a kickdown cable I can adjust? Or is this something else? My TPS only reads 3.5V at WOT but I don't know if the TPS affects downshifting....

Can try adjusting the TV cable. Should be on passenger side of the throttle body, has a white tab. Not sure if that would be your issue if it's a last gear shift.

Are you low on tranny fluid? How long has it been since you changed the fluid? One thing I am thnking without knowing anything else is that about the situation is that the fluid might have gotten too hot changing it's dynamics and not allowing it to build the necessary pressure to make it downshift. Once you got moving and got air flowing over the pan it started to cool down causing it to return to it's proper operating temp viscosity. Do you have a trans cooler on it the D?

First set the TPS by installing a new one and setting it.

Second. Fluid filter replacement on the trans just for good luck. A band adjustment might be necessary.

The WOT on the TPS isn't registered on the PCM causing the trans to fail to down shift in my opinion. I think you should start at the TPS first!

One thing I was thinking about may be the lockup clutch for the torque converter as well. Definitely start with the small stuff first. I'm just thinking that if the lockup doesn't disengage easily it would make it hard to bring the RPM's up.

Very true!

One would think that at WOT and even registering 3.5w the PCM would tell the trans to shift. But if it can't get a good signal or intermediate signal then I could see it.

I would check that trans fluid. Have you taken your truck anywhere recently?

It definatly felt electronic... I will change the tranny fluid and filter and adjust the bands and let you know, but it didn't feel mechanical...

And no, my truck hasn't been across the border... No illnesses from foreign countries...

Hahha, but in all seriousness, no just been up and down the road here and there, no off roading or anything... I do my own work and don't take it to shops... I am going to change my TPS today...

Cool, yeah I got the TPS adjustment down... But now I want to make sure everything else is done...

I am going to get me a tranny filter. How much fluid and what type should I use? I am going to turn 100k miles here by the end of the year. I usually go for OEM fluids but if there is something out there I can use that is just as good, I might as well go for it...

Also going to do a band adjustment. So let me get this straight, loosen lock nut, torque adjustment screw to 72 in lbs and then back off 3-5/8 turns? Torque lock nut to 30 ft lbs? I think I have the 42RE tranny... Rear band is 72 in lbs minus 4 turns. Correct? Just making sure I am reading the manual right.

Also, what are my tranny oil pan gasket options? I like the rubber/silicon OEM gaskets like for the water pump but do they make those for the tranny or just cork?

Fluid is ATF+3 and you should need about 9 quarts if I remember right. You can get a good deal at Wal-mart. It is very hard to find tho.

The OEM pan has a rubber gasket all ready. No need to replace it. Just lubricate it on installation with a small amout of grease (VERY SMALL). Remember to clean the magnet off in the bottom of the pan.

Now for the band adjustment. I've never done it so I can't help ya there.
