99 Durango 5.2 dies in reverse when cold.
I brought the vehicle to Automatic Transmission Center of Ogden Utah which is the best around. They had the vehicle for 2 weeks and looked at everything. Line pressure, output speed sensor etc. They said that the transmission is not causing the engine to stumble. The fluid and filter are clean. So I brought it home.
I put the rear end on jacks and fired it up in the morning. As usual it idled fine in neutral and drive but stumbled in reverse even with the wheels off the ground and spinning. I tried to check the timing while it was doing this and found that the timing was correct. However I found that cylinders 2, 7 & 8 were mis firing badly during the stumbling condition. I used the timing light to visually see the spark signal. After about 3 minutes of stumbling it smoothed out and the timing light indicated good consistant spark on all cylinders.
I then replaced the cam position sensor, rotor, cap, wires and plugs. I even routed the plug wires per the AllData intructions to rule out crossfire. After all of that, it still has the problem. Tomorrow I will replace the crank position sensor and see what happens.

Anyway, I don't know to much about "Automatic Transmission Center of Ogden Utah" but the guy I take my truck to is in Salt Lake City. He has an old shop up town about 845 South & Main in SLC.
He's expensive, but he knows what he's doing and he can make a towing transmission last for 300k. The owners name is Brian Lesis, he inherited the shop from his dad and the place looks like a hole in the wall, but that's the only guy that work on mine. http://www.lelistransmission.com/

Do me a favor, go to the drivers side by the linkage going into the trans. There should be a 8 pin harness that controls the electric parts of the trans. Unplug it and start up the truck and put it in reverse and see if it dies, if it shifts just fine then it is an electrical issue, if it dies then it is hydraulic or internal issue.

I had my abs unplugged for awhile and it never died when engaging, same concept I think that you're trying to test hydra. This sounds like some wire is being contacted or something when the shifter is in the reverse position. I would trace the shift cable and have some one move it back and forth. My $.02
PROBLEM IS SOLVED- I replaced the Crank Position Sensor and it fixed it. Tanner Transmissions never put the grommet in so the sensor hole was wide open and dirt was getting inside. When I pulled the sensor out it was very very dirty.
