2001 durango audio system problem
hi, i have a question about a 2001 duragno with a stock audio system. im not sure what the stock system is.
my father is asking me to fix the bass in the durango but i have no idea how. basically wherever the sound of the bass is coming from, is blown and my father wants it replaced. how do i go about fixing the sound of the bass? if i need to be more specific please let me know because i really am not sure if im giving enough information. thank you

so like i figured, what you suggested is wrong, first off, if the speaker was blown, it would sound bad even if the bass is turned all the way down, second off, all of the speakers sound blown when the bass is turned up. any other suggestions anyone?
Good question. Now here are two scenarios... 1 the speaker foam surround is brittle and old, thus it would be in a deteriorated state, this will have a very undesirable sound, ok horrible ... 2 the voice coil is burned this can cause the popping sound when the bass is up or just sound really crappy. both of these can be counter acted by turning the bass down half or all the way. cheap fix for the foam is duck tape from speaker cone to metal frame, unless you want to get some repair kit
Mhutchby,
Go the to DIY thread stickied on top of this forum. I have a extensive message thread discussion about speakers. I even have a step by step repair procedure using the repair kit from simplyspeakers.com to repair my oem's. There are two ways to approach it.
Repair your OEM's. www.simplyspeakers.com sells a foam repair kit for I think less than $30 a pair.
Replace them with Infinity reference 6022's. These speakers supposedly have the special 3 ear ring adaptor to connect them directly to the durango's speaker mounting location without any retrofiting. If you do not get these special adaptors with the speakers, crutchfield sells the adaptors for you.
Mostly from my experience of the OEM speakers, the foam are blown. But the voice coil is still in good shape.

The woofer is connected to the magnet threw a device called a spider.
Ah heck... instead of just explain the construction of a speaker to you, I am simply going to tell you there are different problems that occur to them, each resulting in different symptoms. A speaker certainly can be bad if it sounds distorted with higher base settings, and if lowered sound perfectly fine.
If the system is completely stock then the cause is the speakers most likely. simply do a search on the forum and look for infinity replacements. will be one of the best and cheapest options.

alright, all these answers sound alot better and make a lot more sense, sorry that i acted like i knew everything upon duranged's answer but his didn't make much sense, plus i did not know there were two parts to a speaker like you stated schusterjo.
just a question though, since all these answers make sense, is it possible to happen to all of the speakers at once? because they did not go out one by one, one day they just all stopped working and produced that horrible sound when the bass was turned up but worked fine with no bass at all.
since i need to know, how can you tell if your durango has an infinity system already installed? (neither me nor my dad would no is there another way to check?)
if so where is the amp located?
kensai, i was reading about you getting the infinity refrence 6012's, what's the difference between those and the 6022's.
does it matter if i get the 6022i or the 6022si?
are both the rear and front speakers the same size (6 1/2)?
what is the thing that is about 2 1/2 inches on the rear passenger doors kinda by the door handle that sounds like a speaker? (is it just the tweeter itself?)
sorry for all the questions

The difference between the 6012 and 6022 is ohms. 6012's were the 2nd generation speakers from the 6002 line. Cannot remember what changed. Today's version of reference series is the 6022's. 6022's are 3rd generation reference speakers and have a 2 ohm rating vs the 6012's 4 ohm rating. From what I confirmed, most factory infinity systems uses 2 ohm speakers. You can always use a higher ohm rating than what the system is designed for. You may loose some sound output because of the higher resistance but overall, it will not harm your audio system. Just remember, you cannot go the other way around. If your audio system is design for 4 ohm system, you cannot use a 2 ohm speaker for 4 ohm system, otherwise, you are in likeihood of shorting out your system.
The difference between the 6022i's and 6022si's is the depth. If you re-install the aftermarket infinitys back onto the plastic spacer ring that mounts back to the door, go with the 6022i's. If you do not reuse the plastic spacer ring, you may need to use the shallow version 6022si's. The shallow version does not provide as good bass response as the regular 6022i's because of the shorter depth.
The thing about the 2.5 inches is the maximum depth allowed for your speaker. there is a shaft the window rides on that is directly in the way of the speaker location. So if your speaker depth is more than 2.5 inches, the speaker will not fit because it will hit the shaft.
If memory serves, this clearane may apply to the fronts as well as the rears.
If you use the OEM plastic spacer, you will not have to worry about the 2.5 inch depth. The spacer will easily add about another full inch to your depth to 3.5 inches.
