ran 4hi at highway speed for about 10 minutes then finally got to shift out of but had a horrible burnt smell any ideas?

 

you arent supposed to run your 4wd at anything over 45mph if im not mistaken. and your not supposed to shift in or out unless your between 0-45 either.

at least that was what i was told. Ive run it at over 45 before with no problems but i only ran it at that speed for like 3 to 5 min.

 

thats correct your not supposed to run it at highway speeds, but my dad has run his back and forth to work on 80/287 for 5 years and has yet to have any problems w/ it, but he only; does this after a snow storm (after is plowed) bc he had some bad experience w/ one of the on ramps.

NOTE: this is NOT a good idea and you SHOULD NOT do it, (yes i have been telling him this everytime i hear him say that he "needed" it, only to find out it was on mostly dry highway

 

Replace the fluid in the transfer case, I'm sure it is burnt at this point. It takes ATF. Use ATF+4 and don't do that again or you may be looking at a new transfer case if you don't need one now. Only use 4wd on snow or dirt. When the road switches from snow to pavement switch out of 4wd into 2wd and vice versa. Never shift in or out of 4wd above 45 mph.

 

With my '03 I dont think U can switch it while moving anyways..... It says it has to be in "P" or "N"

 

should be able to. but dont take my word on it...mine has to be in "n" but when your rolling you put it in neutral and shift it into 4wd and put it back in gear and vice versa...just dont do it above 45mph

 

Mine is made to shift on the fly in drive. I dunno why they would make it any other way for a later model. Maybe you are thinking of switching into 4lo which is done at a standstill and in neutral?

 

durrr, yea I am thinkin of 4Lo.......

They are in fact shift on the fly but not into 4X4 low!!!!!
