I have a cold knock on my 2000 dodge durango. It only lasts for 30 seconds, but it is annoying as hell any ideas? oil pressure is good. oil is changed every 2500 to 3000 miles. i use 5W30 oil and the filter i use contains an anti drain back valve. i have been informed that the noise is the hydraulic lash adjusters building up pressure, and that it is not harmful to the engine. I want to know if that is true or not. Any ideas? I welcome your answers!

 

mine has been doing this too, accoridng to my parents since it was new (they bought the truck new) and same regular maintance and everything as yours

mine sounds like more of a ticking than a knock

 

Is that the right weight of oil for the 4.7? I was pretty sure it is 10w30 for all of them and you shouldn't use 5w30 unless you are in an extremely cold climate.

 

no im almost 100% sure the manual calls for 5w30, but either way i run whatever the manual recomends,


and i forgot to mention mine is only there when it has been sitting for a while, like overnight, or during school, if i park to run into a store for 10 -15 min its not there when i come back

It's 10W-30 I thought. Try Fully Synthetic oil or different type and get a good filter like OEM or another. Maybe try a different filter.

The other thing it could be is MAYBE sluge but might just be a back lash.

 

This is proally gonna make the die hard non-additive peeps hate me=Lucas Oil Leak stopper =works good for that lil knock especially if it's a high mile engine..I use that and also z-max oil additive.Use the z-max first and then add the lucas and add both with the engine running and then drive atleast 20mins to circulate itand make sure you do this aftewr an oil change and supstitute the lucas and z-max for one quart of 10w30.and and make sure you prefill the oil filter atleast 1/2 way..good luck and I'd love to hear if any one has had problems with z-max or lucas products

Im kinda thinking it might be what Hydrashocker Mentioned, after closely examining the symptoms i am starting to believe all my little "Quirks" are coming down to just Sludge. Hesitation/oil consumption/coldstart-tick/non-synthetic oil with this much mileage

hmm.. so now where do i start with this repair?

 

Just do an oil change every 1000 miles for about 3000 miles and that should really clean her up.
