Default First time using 4WD after diff fluid change

So I had to turn around today and when I did, I used the same place I always do... However, since this IS Washington, it has been raining straight the past three days making the ground soggy... Needless to say, my tire sunk bad and bottomed out up front... Put it in 4LO to back out and then back into 2WD... Wasn't in 4WD more than 30 seconds and there was no wheel spin... I heard a LOUD clunk from the rear and don't know what that was about, but about 1 mile down the road I smelled a VERY strong scent of gear oil... OH GREAT! Split front diff? No... No leaks... I pop the hood and notice the smell is from the passenger side... Looked at the vent hose and sure enough, it had spewed quite a bit all over the place... Now I have Royal Purple all over the passenger side now... I am *hoping* that it was just the angle, some got in the line and when I started to drive, diff pressurized sending the fluid from the lines, out the vent... Does that sound plausible?

Nope.... Not in my book.

Sounds like classic axel bind to me.

You put it in 4X4 and backed out then switched it back to 2 HI. But with the angle and a slipery surface the front gained axel bind that caused the T-case to incorporate torque on the gears. (AKA axel bind) This can lead to the drivelines not being able to disengage in the T-case keeping it locked in 4X4 even though you are in 2 HI.

The 242-HD Transfer Case has this problem. The olny way to get the axel bind completly out is to reverse and turn the wheels all the way to the right and then all the way to the left while rolling backwards. Then ensuring that it has come all the way out by pulling forward on dry asphalt slowly and turning the wheels sharp and feel for the wheel hop. I do this both sides right and left to ensure that the T-case is ALL the way out. The owners manual will tell you this isn't nesassary, but I don't care.

If you have one of these T-Cases then shift it into 4PT and take it out without moving. Then lift the front end and you will see the wheels turn to disengage the axel bind.

As for the fluid??????? Doesn't make sense???????? I think you are going to find other issues. Drop the skid plate and take a better look into it!

BTW<------ I HATE Royal Purple.....IMHO

LOL! Wow! Glad that is now out of my system... Funny thing is, beer is supposed to help flush out your kidneys... I thought I was rid of my kidney stones, I guess not... Good thing I had some meds to keep the pain down... I have heard a few women say they would rather give natural birth, than to pass kidney stones... Just a little FYI for those that haven't had the pleasure of kidney stones...

But yeah, it's a 1999 5.2l 4x4... I have the manual select transfer case... The one with the lever to select, I cannot remember the number of it...

2WD, 4PT, 4FT, N, 4LO... I used 4LO because it always goes directly into 4WD as compared to 4PT and 4FT... It used to take up to a mile or so at 25 mph to engage... But after the transfer case fluid change, it is quicker... However, still not instant... Not to mention, it was a massive hole I was in and needed that extra power... I also took an extensive look at the diffs and transfer case... No leaks, cracks or holes of any kind...

You have the NV-242 HD transfer case. Consitering that I think you were not out of 4X4 because of lockup and consitering that you are having problems with shifting it I beleive your problem is directly involving the transfer case.

To engage the T-case correctly you change out in park and place it in lets say 4PT or 4FT. Then you place the trany in reverse then drive to engage. On the fly action (which I don't condone) you swich with your foot on the gas then take your foot off the gas then place it back on. Here is some info on the NV-242 HD case:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...k-in-lock.html

Difference's in 4X4 PT, Low, Hi, AWD ( 1 2 3 ... Last Page)

The heat up of fluid if overfilled COULD come out the vent tube if enough heat forced it.....IMHO....I'm not sure exactly how?

Have you fully pulled it out of 4X4 and how did you get it home?

Heres some more info:
