that would depend on what your starting specs are, and how much you want to tow, for the most part, yes any mechanic should be able to do it,
you NEED to get:
2" hitch receiver (i believe mine is a class IV)
transmission cooler
make sure you are up to date on maintance (trans fluid, tune up(plugs, wires[if you have them], air filter), plenty of brake left ect)

you COULD
upgrade gears (from 3.55s which are most common to 3.92 or 4.10)

where do you guys buy new gears to change the gearing? and what gear do i need to go from stock to be able to tow better?

i am thinking of keeping the durango and just towing a 12x6 enclosed.

is there a how to or do i just follow the shop manual to change it out.

well before we can recommend gears we need to know what your stock gearing is (should be on a sticker in your glove box) and how much weight you want to tow, and how much you want to spend, remember if you have a 4x4 you also need to change the front gears too

its a stock 4.7 liter, 2 wheel drive truck. i dont know the gearing, but i would image its a 3.55 gear, but i would have to double check.

in your case gears is not too expensive to do, but its not going to be one of the cheapest things to do, get back to us with the gear ratio and we can direct you from there

ok guys, i am still doing this trailer thing. i just have been trying to decide one the size and price i wanted to spend.

i am going to pull the trigger on this, if you guys think the durango can manage it.

its 7x14 enclosed trailer that weights in at 1870lbs.

i will be putting a few of my sons dirt bikes in it, he is 6 yrs, so you are talking about 50cc and 65cc dirt bikes. i will probably put some cabinets in the nose of it and insulate it, so i can run a roof mount AC unit.

my durango is a 2003 4.7 magnum, all stock. it has a 3.5 tag on the rear end, and about 85k on the clock.

i plan to get a tranny cooler, and brake controller. and if needed a weight distro hitch set up.


i will be towing in Florida, so not many hills to contend with, just some rolling up and down on the interstate.

please give me your best input and/or recommendations.

I would try without the EQ hitch first. Everything sounds good so far tho.

awesome. i am going to give that place a call tomorrow. if everything is good, i am going to buy the trailer and go to GA to pick it up this week.

I plan on putting a tranny cooler in front of the radiator this week. can i just quickly pull the hoses off and plug it with my finger or a plug to get the new hose on? or is that going to make too much of a mess. i just changed the fluid out last year, so i should be good on fluid.

i will keep you guys updated.

yea that looks like the trailer my boy scout troop has for moving gear to and from camp sites, we have pulled it around for them just fine (i got the 4.7 w/ 3.55 gears and 4x4) so you should be fine (of course do everything you were planning) i have the tow package and nothing else so you should be able to manage it fine

I know you'll be fine. while I have a 5.9 with 3.9 rear end I tow our 2002 mastercraft prostar 209 (3500lb boat+ trailer) just fine and have even towed a Super Air 220 (4000lb boat+trailer weight) just fine with a normal class V hitch, no trans cooler, no oil cooler, etc. I mean they were short distances (50miles tops) but I think you will be more then fine to tow that small of a trailer and some bikes around with a 4.7
