2003 dodge durango engine light problem
i have an 03 durango with a serios engine light problem.(SLT 4.7 AWD ) i also have a superchip progammer/ diagnostic reader. the fault code reads VACUMM EVAP PURGE SYSTEM . i have replaced the O2 sensors, cam position sensor, crank position sensor, catalytic converter, idle speed sensor, gas cap, spark plugs and wires, purge valve, and a number of other things, the truck, (when initially started) will idle fine for 15 to 20 seconds. then the rpm level will drop and run rough, if you give it any fuel, it will die. if it dies you can imediately start it back up and it will run fine until you have to start it again. if you don't give it fuel, within 15 seconds, it will go back to a good idle ,( kind of reseting itself and it will run fine.)then only thing that has been upgraded is i programed the truck with the superchip for performance mode and it has a flowmaster cat back exhaust. i work for the US MILITARY. it's never left me on the side of the road and that's a good thing considering i live in SOUTH KOREA, but would love to get that problem worked out.very limited resources here for my year truck. i have been back and forth with the chrysler dealers here in korea but because they never sold this model durango in this country, knowledge is limited, please advise.....thank you....dave

?????
the things you have replaced, with the exception of the gascap are not related tot he evap system, you probably have a bad hose, or purge valve in the evaporative system, or the charcoal canister under the truck by the gastank is bad (although i have never heard of them going bad)
my first thing to check would be the gascap (you have done that) so now i will point you at any and all hoses associated with the evap system, expecially the ones under the hood and going to the charcoal canister by the gastank, any cracks in them cause leaks, which the computer does not like,
btw the truck should not die on the side of the road as long as all you have is an evap code, mine throws the code every year btwn fall and winter as the temps drop and has never left me on the side of the road bc of it (actually the only time i have been left is when the first battery died, lol)
First problem I see is in the first sentence. The 4.7L doesn't come with AWD. Only the 5.9L R/T comes with AWD. Then you go into spark plugs and wires, the 4.7L has NO wires.
With that said I am thinking you have a 5.9L correct? You need to stop throwing parts at it and come here instead. First, you need to reset the computer.
Engine Code Index (Check Engine Light?)
Next this is a emissions problem as Sharp is saying. Did you replace the gas cap with a dealer cap?

03 durango engine light problem. would a bad hose or gas cap cause the engine to stall like i previously explained? my truck is a 4.7 SLT AWD didn't really know that was unusual until now....please advise, the canister has been replaced and the purge valve. running out of options.....thanks ..dave
the rough idle at start up could be a bad IAC motor, its on the back of the throttle body, and while you CAN clean it, for a $30.00 part its not worth the effort just replace it, and this can cause all sorts of odd problems with idling, but so can a weak/dead battery, so change the IAC and have the battery load tested, if it is over 3 years old you probably got your monies worth out of it so if it test even a little weak just replace it
