Default gauge cluster

my gauge cluster cracked the junk yard has on with 228,000 miles
if i use this one will it show the 228,000 or my actual miles, i dont want it if it will show that many miles.
so my question really is are the miles stored on the cluster or in the computer?

It will probably show in the cluster, That is why they have a odomoter disclosure statement section of most state titles. Just make sure you record actual miles before you switch out clusters. Did the gauge face crack or the glass? If it is the glass face it is pretty easy to remove/replace. I removed my glass face to install a brushed aluminum trim plate and it only took me about 10-15 minutes. Seven screws I believe.

the mileage is stored in BOTH the cluster and the pcm. the mileage you see on the odometer is the one in the cluster. you never see the mileage in the pcm unless you look with a scanner.

so if you swap that cluster, it will show 228K. i don't care, but be aware that its illegal in all states to not disclose an inaccurate mileage.

dealers cannot/will not change the mileage in the cluster. since dealers are basically crooked as hell, they are not provided with a means to adjust the mileage. those tools are kept in detroit under tight control, and used on brand new clusters only.

you can find clusters on ebay right and left for cheap. i got one for $25. just match your year range, manual/auto trans, KM/MILES (don't overlook this), gas/diesel if that applies.

what's cracked - the whole thing or just the clear plastic cover ? plastic cover is replacable

sorry for the slow response hahaha, the plastic cracked that protects the gauges, the junk yard wants 35 bucks for the cluster but i dont want it to show 75,000 miles more than my truck has.
whats a new plastic cover thing run? hows it replaced?

called the dealer and they said they can order a new cluster and programme it to read actual miles for 1200 bucks. for a 99 no way

The plastic is just a cover, and it is held on with a few screws. I dont see any need for replacing the whole cluster...

I am not sure you can purchase just the plastic window, you might have to suck it up and but the cluster, but you should be able to swap out the window in about 10-15 minutes. Since you are removing/replacing I would strongly recommend a instrument panel similiar to this one. Keep in mind this is a 2001 but check this out in google search, they might have them for 99's A reasonably priced and easy to install trim piece to the instrument panel.

if you can buy the junkyard bezel and it comes with the plastic (it SHOULD) just buy it and only use the plastic cover from it, gotta be cheaper than buying a new cluster

Exactly...

Did you ask the junkyard for just the cover and they said no? If so find another one and ask them just for the cover and not cluster.

so everyone is certain that the miles on the junkyard cluseter will show and not my actual miles?

if this is the case i will just try the plastic lens swap and let you know how that goes.
