Default rear audio issue

When i purchased my 2000 durango SLT the rear speakers produced no sound other than an occasional crackle. It has the infinity chrysler audio package. I was interested in replacing the entire sound system and i now have two sets of infinity 6022i's installed and i am now looking to install a new head unit because i assume the lack of power to the rear speakers was caused by a short in the stock stereo.

Before you rule out the deck, the OEM Infinity system has a separate amp located at the passenger side kick panel. You may need to make sure the amp itself is not bad before replacing the deck.

Yeah, what he^ said. Could also be cracked foam rings around the speakers? Rubber cement or liquid electrical tape will repair it for you.

I planned on replacing everything but the amp and sub. Today i installed a new head unit and everything sounds great.
