Default Need info on Valve Spring replacement

I have a 1999 Durago, 5.9 that started running rough and giving the classic 0203 and 0204 codes. Replaced both injectors ( cylinder 3 and 4 ) as well as the pre o2 sensor. No more codes now and does runs better but had a disturbing sound I tracked with a steathoscope to cylinder 3. Pulled valve cover and found a bent push rod and broken spring. My question, on this engine where do I position the crank to replace the valve springs for cylinder 3 ? TDC ?. And do I take it straight to 23 pounds torque ? Althougth I only have one broken spring and damaged rod I will replace the pair for the cylinder.

I have all the tools for the job ie, air adaptor and spring compresor etc, etc.

And yes like most comments on this board I have been thru all the repairs that I see in this forum and I mean ever repair. On a good note it has given me a great excuse with my wife to keep buying more tools. I think I may need a new vertical compressor to put in the valve spring LOL. I wonder how long I can keep this vehicle going because the payoffs are great.

Thanks in advance.

1. When tightening the rocker arm bolts, make sure the piston in that cylinder is NOT at TDC. Contact between the valves and piston could occur. Tighten rocker bolts to (21 ft. lbs.)

2. You should only replace what broke, although I would replace both.

Anytime you can use an excuse to buy more tools, well that clearly means your the MAN......Just did that very same thing today......LOL

Hey thanks for the reply and just in time as I have the day off Tuesday and will put the new springs and rods in. Sure a lot different then the old days when we would put clips on the rockers and turn them down till they stopped making noise.

Thanks again !

The best way, is use compress air in the cylinder to keep the valve up into the seat. Then use the spring compressor. This way the valve don't drop into the cylinder.
