Default 1999 Pinion seal help please

Hello all,

I'm working on my Daughters '99 Durango and found the rear end pinion seal is leaking. I can't really get under it right now and I've tried looking up the part and they are asking for the rear end size, saying it's on the tag. The 2 choices are; 8.25 & 8.375 OR 9 1/4.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...xt=pinion+seal

I can't see a large tag, but there is a small on on one of the bolts that looks like it's stamped 3.5 I guess it could be 8.5 but it's hard to tell. Any way to tell it's a posi ?

Also anybody know the nut size?
Any other tips ?

Thanks,
Frank

count the bolts, i think 10 bolt or 12 bolts on the cover 10 should be 8.25 inch rear and 12 would be 9.25, the 3.5 is 3.55 rear end gear ratio, and chances are it is NOT a posi (or limited slip)

If you have a 12 bolt pattern you have a 9.25 Chrysler rear end. You might wasnt to replace the yoke if it is pitted, if not clean it up with a very fine grit sand paper like 320 grit then put a little grease around the contact points and seal then install. Torque the Pinion Nut up to 210 ft. lbs on the Crush Sleeve with 10-20 in.lbs on the pinion pre-load. Remember to use a generous amount of Loctite (removable).

Here is the part#: 5126 Timken Seal

Thanks for the replies,

Hydrashocker, you said;
Torque the Pinion Nut up to 210 ft. lbs on the Crush Sleeve with 10-20 in.lbs on the pinion pre-load.

I don't have a torque wrench that goes to 210 ft.lbs so I will have to hunt one down.

But I'm not sure what you mean about the pinion pre-load or how to do it. If you could explain that would help.

Thanks & thanks again,

Frank

Doing a pinion/yoke/seal is very meticulous. You should probably take it in.
