Unless it's 4wd and the transfer case can be put in neutral.

All Durango's are ready to tow up to 5000 lbs in any gear ratio or engine size with no modifications. Remember that you need to read the owners manual on towing the Jeep as you might have to lift up all 4 wheels during towing (a flat bed or trailer with all 4 wheels off the ground) and you have to add trailer weight regardless to your GWVR as needed. Concitering you have a towing hitch I would assume that it had the tow package installed at the dealer (unless aftermarket towing hitch has installed) and with the 5.2L engine you should be rated at 5500 lbs with 355 gearing and about 6900 with 392 gear ratio so you should be fine.
Oops, that's right the 2WD, 5.9L is rated for 7,550 lbs. and the 4WD, 5.9L is rated for 7,300 lbs (2002 at least). The R/Ts are only rated for 2,000 lbs.

So what's a 2wd 5.9 with 4.56:1 gears and added leaf springs rated?

Added leaf springs don't change GVWR. You are still around 7,500lbs.

The R/T has a 5.9L motor, AWD transfer case, 392 gearing, and a 46RE trans so it must be 7,000lbs-7,300lbs.

I believe the low tow rating is due to their sport suspension, but I've seen were some thinks it's due to the tongue weight limitation. I think they were originally rated for 6,000+ lbs, but more recently dropped to 2,000 lbs.

I'm sure it's a "COA" rating from Dodge.

In any case if you're gonna tow, look into an eletronic brake booster just in case. You all know how our brakes are under rated for our Ds.

I actually had my mom's '95 Altima at 2853# on a 20' flatbed trailer, behind my Durango yesterday.

Not sure the trailer's weight, but the total should be about the same as your 3,100# Jeep and a dolly.

47 miles trip. Reset my AVE ECO at 14.7 which hasn't been reset in at least 4-5 months, so it should be pretty accurate mpg of my normal driving.

Ended up at 13.2 on the highway and 12.8 overall (after getting off the highway, going up and down several hills at lower speeds, etc.).

If memory serves me correctly, the 5.2L is rated at 230 hp & 300 lbsft of torque (with the 5.9L at 245 hp & 330 lbsft of torque), so you should have no problems at all towing that Jeep.

This is the heaviest thing I've towed to date, and I was quite impressed with how the Durango handled itself!

I would be REALLY surprised if you actually hand calculated your mileage while towing that much you got anywhere close to that much.

I'm not sure how accurate the computer calculates the mpg as you drive, but those are the numbers I had after the trip (from the readout on the headliner, 99% stock Durango).
