Thoughts on Towing
Have a 99 Durango 5.2 liter----might be picking up a jeep comanche this week and would like to tow it back rather than drive it back.
Distance is a little over an hour away and looking to use a 2 wheel tow dolly and pull with Durango.
What are some opinions on this?
thanks

Hmmm ok
Should work as long as you have plenty of gas in the Durango and the Jeep in neutral.
Are you expecting the Durango to have problems towing it?
Or are you wanting alternates to the 2 wheel dolly method?

Ive used different veichles for towing and a variety of trailers and tow dollies.....just recently purchased the durango and not too familar with the towing capablities and dont want to over-haul anything and mess up the trans or rearend.
Already has a hitch installed.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere...
I know my 5.9L is rated for 7,800 lbs, so the 5.2L should be able to handle 3,100 (Jeep's weight) without any problems.
Dolly would be the preferred way to move it... as in the dolly weights less than a full car trailer would, so you come out ahead.
Since you just bought the Durango, check the u-joint to make sure it's tight and not needing replacement.

a 2002 5.9L 4X4 with 392 gearing is only rated at 7,300 lbs (the highest), however a 4X2 is rated a little higher.
All Durango's are ready to tow up to 5000 lbs in any gear ratio or engine size with no modifications. Remember that you need to read the owners manual on towing the Jeep as you might have to lift up all 4 wheels during towing (a flat bed or trailer with all 4 wheels off the ground) and you have to add trailer weight regardless to your GWVR as needed. Concitering you have a towing hitch I would assume that it had the tow package installed at the dealer (unless aftermarket towing hitch has installed) and with the 5.2L engine you should be rated at 5500 lbs with 355 gearing and about 6900 with 392 gear ratio so you should be fine.

If the Jeep is an automatic, you might want to take out the driveshaft so it does not screw up your transmission in the Jeep. You do not want the driveshaft turning on any vehicle while it is being towed, causes damage to an automatic trans.
