Default New Problem

I'm not very familiar with this site so I am unsure if this should be posted elsewhere.
1999 durango will not start. Low voltage going to the ignition coil. There is absolutely NO spark. Bought a new ignition coil, didn't fix it. Tested crankshaft position sensor, 5 volt supply is good, sensor ground is good, and it seems to be operating fine. Moved on to the camshaft position sensor. The supply voltage and sensor ground tested good, but I am getting a constant 5 volts at the sensor feedback terminal. Unplugged the sensor and tested the terminals that feed it. With or without the engine cranking there is 5 volts present at the signal return terminal for the PCM. Should there be? Or should it pulse as the engine rotates? Help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
(I corrected the problems from my earlier posts and the vehicle ran great for about 1 week.)

Did you try the spark plug cable from the disty to the coil?

Sounds like a camshaft sensor. Also replace the coil wire to the distributor.

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
The camshaft position sensor is located in the distributor
on 3.9L, 5.2L, and 5.9L engines.
The sensor contains a hall effect device called a
sync signal generator to generate a fuel sync signal.
This sync signal generator detects a rotating pulse
ring (shutter) on the distributor shaft. The pulse ring
rotates 180 degrees through the sync signal generator.
Its signal is used in conjunction with the crankshaft
position sensor to differentiate between fuel
injection and spark events. It is also used to synchronize
the fuel injectors with their respective cylinders.
When the leading edge of the pulse ring (shutter)
enters the sync signal generator, the following occurs:
The interruption of magnetic field causes the voltage
to switch high resulting in a sync signal of approximately
5 volts. When the trailing edge of the pulse ring (shutter)
leaves the sync signal generator, the following occurs:
The change of the magnetic field causes the sync signal

voltage to switch low to 0 volts.

CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR—5.2/5.9L V-8
ENGINE
Engine speed and crankshaft position are provided
through the crankshaft position sensor. The sensor
generates pulses that are the input sent to the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM). The PCM interprets
the sensor input to determine the crankshaft position.
The PCM then uses this position, along with
other inputs, to determine injector sequence and ignition
timing.
The sensor is a hall effect device combined with an
internal magnet. It is also sensitive to steel within a
certain distance from it.
On 5.2/5.9L V-8 engines, the flywheel/drive plate
has 8 single notches, spaced every 45 degrees, at its
outer edge (Fig. 4).
The notches cause a pulse to be generated when
they pass under the sensor. The pulses are the input
to the PCM. For each engine revolution, there are 8
pulses generated on V-8 engines.
The engine will not operate if the PCM does not
receive a crankshaft position sensor input.

Checked all cables. Coil wire and all plug wires (all new). Have new spark plugs as well. I discovered that the ignition coil wasn't powering up when all attempts to test for spark failed. I even did the stupid (grab the coil's output terminal) while a friend turned the engine over. I know it wasn't smart but every other technique to test for spark got no results.

I had tested the crankshaft position sensor and when it tested good (switched on and off) I moved on to the camshaft sensor. Before replacing it, I tested for supply voltage. The supply and the sensor ground terminal are operating fine. My concern came when I backprobed the camshaft sensor signal terminal. I was getting a constant voltage (while key was on) at the output terminal of the sensor. I then unpluged the sensor and checked for voltage on the PCM side of the connector. I was getting a 5 volt reading on the supply AND the (signal) line. Unless I am mistaken, shouldn't there be a 0 volt reading on the camshaft sensor signal return line until the sensor is triggered? Even with the camshaft sensor unplugged, I get a 5 volt reading from the PCM side of the connection.
I basically do not want to install a new sensor just to have it fail.
Has anyone ever tested the terminals on the PCM side of the connection and did you get a 5 volt reading on the signal line? (Terminal 3)
Again, thank you soo much for your time.

If there are any mechanics reading this post are close to Geneva Ohio, has computer diagnostic capabilities and would like a new customer, please let me know. I can afford the repair bills. I am even willing to pay in advance before any work is done.

Yea that's right. Since all of your local repair shops are ********, never buy a Dodge again. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

That's not the way to get Dodge fans to help you with your simple to fix Dodge.

Also, start a new thread for your issues as was suggested and complied with from the previous poster to you.

My sincere apologies to all dodge fans for my previous post. That was very closed minded of me to post something like that. I truely did not intend to insult or offend ANYONE by what I said. I realize how rude that was and have removed the ignorant rant.
I was highly frustrated and stressed last night after replacing the CPS just to have the same problem and it unfortunately poured out in my post. I know that's no excuse and I apologize. That will never happen again.

Dodge has actually been my favorite vehicle since I was 19 and I shouldn't have stated otherwise. I do appreciate the help I have gotten here, and would hate to loose the opportunity for further help. I hope I can be given another chance.

Sincerely, OneQuestion

I will also start a new thread about the problem I am having.
