should i get a whole timing chain set? these are bloody expensive!!

CLOYES Part # 90393S
SOHC; Includes: Cam (2), Crank, Idler Sprocket (2), Chain (3), Tensioner (3), Guide (2), Tensioner Arm (2) $447.99

i think if i repleace the chains i will just do them and the guides. here is my list so far:

also, thanks hydra for this link. this is so much cheaper than other places i have found online. i can't believe how much cheaper they are than summit! i am going to have to stop ordering from them now!

1. No on the guides.

DESCRIPTION - VALVE GUIDES
The valve guides are made of powered metal and
are pressed into the cylinder head. The guides are
not replaceable or serviceable, and valve guide reaming
is not recommended. If the guides are worn
beyond acceptable limits, replace the cylinder heads.

2. Cams should be reusable.

Should just need the sprockets, chains, and tensioner.

You really need to download a Service Manual: http://pdftown.com/Dodge-Durango-Service-Manual.html

wow so i'm finally going to put this thing back together. here is what i'm ordering from rockauto.com (everything is CLOYES so I hope they are good):

Timing Cover Gasket Set FEL-PRO Part # TCS46000 $50.79 (1)
Timing Chain CLOYES Part # C393 SOHC; Primary $27.79 (1)
Timing Chain CLOYES Part # C394 SOHC; Secondary $87.58 (2)
Timing Chain Guide CLOYES Part # 9542 SOHC; Secondary $43.78 (2)

1) If replacing the chains is there a specific reason to get new sprockets? At $9.04 a piece I guess it isn't to bad.

2) There are 4 guides listed on rockauto, $142.24 total. should i replace all of them?:
Secondary; Tensioner Arm $15.87
Primary $23.79
Secondary; RIGHT $49.79
SOHC; Secondary; LEFT $52.79

3) loctite all bolts in the engine (color?)?

I am going to get the water pump and gasket from autozone (duralast).
I will get exhaust manifold bolts from the dealer as well as a few other little things.

My machinist ordered my head gasket set as it came with the valve seals he needed so I have a ton of that stuff already (and bolts). HGS1100 from rockauto.

More to come later this week!

1. Yes, because gears ware just like the chains do. They should be replaced to run the same pitch as the new chains as they will be a tight fit. Replace the gears and chains as a match set!

2. From the service manual it states that the guides are NOT replaceable!

3. Red.....Removable type. http://loctiteproducts.com/products/...id=48&plid=154

4. Only get a NEW water pump and NOT a rebuilt!

Sounds great! Hope everything works out and please keep us updated.

I am not really sure as I have never built a 4.7L so I have to talk with experience under my belt on other builds so here it is, buy that kit just to be safe.

Having difficulty getting the cam gear bolts broken loose! I tried a impact wrench and no luck. It seems very tight and won't loosen up. Any suggestions?

man i can't belive i am still not done with this engine.

when i did my cam bolts i put the crank bolt on and had a friend hold it with a breaker bar and a cheater. i then used a breaker and cheater on each cam bolt. you might not belive it but it took about 4 foot of cheater to get it off. of course my friend on the crank bolt also had 4 foot of cheater.
