Default Help!!! Temperature issues.

Ok. I will say I'm sorry for the long intro, but I just want to put all the factors out there. I have a 1999 "D" w/360. When I got it, it would overheat(outside temp prolly around 80+) after it got hot would run poorly. At the same time I have trans shifting issues that go as follows- 1-2-1-2-3-od. So thinking they maybe connected I started throwing sensors at it. The typical IAC,MAP,TPS. MAP seemed to fix it for awhile and helped the overheating. I also had a local radiator shop look at the clutch fan and they said it was good. Flushed and filled the radiator, pressure washed the radiator, changed the radiator cap, and put in a new 180deg. thermostat( which actually made the D run alot better). Then I serviced the trans( fluid was clear and supposedly was recently rebuilt with only 50,000 miles) the trans was horrid. the filter was soooo clogged that after i dropped the pan and went to loosen the filter more fluid came out! Well that helped the shifting issues for awhile. Now that it is starting to warm up outside, the shifting problems are coming backaswell as the runnig alittle warm around 205 to 210. Now for a twist today aprox 75-80 deg outside high winds approx 15-25mph high humidity, drove 30 miles and still couldn't get the engine to warm up WTF? wouldn't even get to the 2cnd bar on the gauge. Thank-you for any insight.

i would look into the temp sending unit for the new issue.

the trans fluid SHOULD be red NOT CLEAR, whoever rebuilt that probably screwed something up. i also dont like that the filters were clogged, that points at some sort of problems to me im sure master-tech will be able to help there.

the overheating could also be related toa bad temp sending unit so replace it and get back to us (unless you have an analogue gauge that you can check it with)

drove it to work today (30 miles). And just before I got there, I turned the heater on high. It blew cold so that kind of tells me a faulty thermostat. As for the trans fluid. I was disappointed to see it was clear. A guy was telling me i need to drain and fill again. Which i plan on doing, but he also told me to do short burst of air through the factory trans cooler with an aircompressor. Has anyone heard of this?

What he means, is with a air nozzle and compress air. You blow compress air thru one of the cooler lines and hope you try not blow air in the wrong direction, because of the oneway ck valve. I am a transmission tech with a chrysler, jeep and dodge dealer. I repair all transmissions in all dodge products.

mastertech any ideas what would be causing may transmission to shift irregular? by the way it only does it under normal driving conditions. If I'm accelerating hard doesn't act up a bit.

At what speeds are you having shifting problem? Is 1st and 2nd gear shift normal and 3rd doesn't upshift, until 40 to 45mph. Irregular shifting could be low on fluid, throttle cable, valve hanging up/ sticking in the valve body, Plugged filter, governor solenoid, or TPS.

I haven't paid attention to speed. However what it does, is shift normal through 1st, then to 2cnd, and will stay in 2cnd until about 2000 or 2500 rpm then all at once will downshift to 1st then 2cnd and then 3rd. kind of like you pressed the accelerator for passing gear.
