Default Rebuilt tranny issues

2000 slt 5.9L 46re tranny and 95K miles.

aamco rebuilt the tranny 300 miles ago, and all was great as I hit the freeway onramp with it floored was a 50 mile trip home and I tested it under strain a few more time's on the way home.

so on to the issue at hand... couple days ago I was head'n to town with the CC on and I notice the rpm jump up 400 for a sec and then drop back down but the truck didn't pick up speed?

did this 3-4 times on a 100 mile trip... got home and checked the the fluid level which is perfect

yesterday I went on a 15 mile trip and drove at 45-50 and it did it 3-4 more time's.

today I make another 15 mile trip on the back road and drove 35-40 mph and at times as low as 15 (its a windy road) and it did this in every gear at least 10 times.

here is what aamco did

new assembly kit transtar
new filter- large
new band- kickdown
rebuilt torque converter
new governor pressure sensor
new transmission pressure sensor
new reverse drum
new overdrive piston retainer
new output speed sensor
new high/reverse drum

any idea what might be going on? thought I would ask here before I called aamco.

I do have a shop book if it's not related to the rebuilt?

thanks for any and all input

Welcome to DF
Did the truck do this before you went to aamco? Is the ck engine lite on now? From what you are saying, sound like the toque converter is surging. Maybe a TPS or brake switch, locking and unlocking the lock-up on the converter.

sounds to me like a TPS but master tech is the transmission expert around these parts

so if you replace the tps and it still does it take it to the shop and complain

thx for the welcome...

no the truck did not do this before. and the engine lite is off and no P codes which I meant to say as I checked all that an hour before I posted

not sure what a TPS or brake switch is as I'm more used to my 86 ford F250

will look in the book on test'n the brake switch's and the TPS???

thanks

+1 for master tech. It also sounds like it is torque converter related to me. There is usually 400-500rpm difference between unlock to full lock up on torque converters.

Default more issue's

delay going into reverse- like 5 secs
have to force it to shift by let'n off the gas 2-3, 3-4
shifting is all over the place on hills
weird noise when going from 1-2, like a rush of fluids going thru something

I called aamco to have them check it out tomorrow.... could the TPS still be the problem?? it's a 30 mile round trip for parts and $50 for the part and want to make sure before I make a trip there

thanks

spent a few hours read'n up on the TPS and the issue's it can cause....

first off it was 20*F the day it shifted late.... I see that is a normal thing on a cold take off with no warm up

also have seen that under a bit of stress all ran fine for many with same issue.... just at a steady pace it will do the surge it seems....

so after all I have read it points to the TPS.....

I called the miss's at work today and she picked one up on her lunch break and will install it later today.

I did go for another 15 mile test drive today as well and didnt baby it.... let it warm up first then took off heavy on the gas and no issue's until I backed off to a steady speed, then I got the RPM surge....

did a WOT from 0 to 110 MPH with no issues at all and pretty happy with the shifts doing that.

from what I read 98% of the time it's the TPS and a cheap fix at that when they act up like this

will report back after I get that in and the mem. cleared, but sure it will be good news

I cleaned the TB and censer's 2000 miles ago (from the DIY's here)so should have just changed this out at the same time it seems?

$51 for a TPS here from napa which is cheaper than the gas cost to get back to aamco to drop off use'n 2 rigs for 100 mile trips...

thx

Default problem solved

Thanks all for the input it has helped alot and saved me alot of time and money.

TPS was bad man can that really mess with a first time AT owners head....

just to add the info up again here I will recap my searchs into this and the info I found as well as learned.

not sure why the TPS goes bad but this is what I think, since it rotates on the inside via the throttle shaft and feeds that info on. it stays in the same spot for most of our driving and wears that spot out.

so when CC is used alot and it wears out there it will only be in that spot what ever the speed is. it wont do it at WOT as that's past the bad spot.... just a guess on that tho.

If the RPM's surge in park or N then it cant be the tranny so no need to look there or spend money on test'n it

every thread here on this RPM surge issue pretty much are the same once you sit down and read them ALL. I dont think I would have even started this thread if I would have done that first.

the TPS is the cure 98% of the time and makes since to me now why it would 50 bucks is cheap compared to what I have seen some spend here before thats the fix... I'm talk'n $1000's saw one person got charged $1200 just to change the TPS and paid that 3 times in 3 years??? other's pay 2-300 at the shop

It took me longer to get it out of the box and read the paper work then it did to change

I would also clean the TB and inspect the other censors and clean. there's a howto here to help with that. It's pretty simple really

when all done reset the computer(there's a howto for that as well) and enjoy the ride

it's a very cheap and easy thing to change, and at 98% success rate why not just give it a try first along with the clean'n.... seems they dont like it much when they do get dirty...

thanks again for the forum and input here... hope my ramble's will help some one as well.

had a great 50 mile ride in the hills as well as the freeway with no issues.

Did you reset the PCM?

Also, could be a vacuum leak. Check your hoses especially the ones off the TB and Intake (hot parts to tubing especially).
